2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

I'm looking for options for 2 way radios. My wife and I ride in the rzr, usually without helmets, and my son follows on an Atv and wears a full face motocross helmet, so I'm looking for a setup that will fit his helmet and allow my wife and I or at least one of us to use a headset. I would also like the capability to add on if people we ride with want to be able to talk with us. What options are there? I know Rugged is a popular brand, but I'm not sure what systems would do what I want and of course I'd like to spend less if possible. My son is always within 100 feet of us so we don't need a lot of range.

Re: 2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

My wife & I use the CARDO Scala Rider Q2 Multiset Pro. I believe this particular set is for 2 units only, but I think there is also a multi user set (g4) too so you can add more than 2 units to be on same channel. It is bluetooth communications and has about 1/4 mile range in terrain and farther in flat lands. We ride extremely dusty, dirty, gritty desert riding and the units have never failed us and its has been really useful when trying new trails or dunes and getting separated.

We both ride quads & xp and love it as we can be zipping along and 'doing our own thing' and I still have the piece of mind she is okay. Besides, its always fun to hear her commentary on my riding :-)

You could always rig up a marine radio for your car and then get a handheld marine radio for him and use a fanny pack or have a small bag(front rack or push bar) with the radio in it and then have a PTT going to the handlebar and then the headset in his helmet.

Re: 2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

The Cardo setups look good, but I'm not real confident in the vox feature. I think I would prefer a ptt setup. It would be nice if everything was contained in my sons helmet though as opposed to having to carry a radio.

Re: 2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

Hey Chris,

We have a couple different setups that would work for you. If you wanted to have an intercom inside the RZR then you and your wife would be able to talk back and fourth to each other as well as listen to music. You would then link a radio into the intercom and that would allow you to communicate to your son. We have a couple different intercom kits which range from $350 - $699. Please see the links for them below.

350 2-Place Intercom System with H41 Headsets [350-2P-H41] - $350.00 : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

550 2 Place Intercom Kit with H41 Headsets [550-2P] - $500.00 : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

Once you got an intercom picked out you would have to link a radio into the system. You could either use a handheld (2-5 miles) or a 50 Watt radio (around 50 miles).

HX370 VHF Handheld Radio [HX370-V] - $225.00 : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

VX2200 50 Watt Vertex VHF Car-to-Car Kit [CAR2CAR-50W-VHF] - $499.00 : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

As far as your son goes, you would need to get him squared away with our motorcycle kit.

2-Way Motorcycle VHF Desert/Woods Radio Kit Desert, Woods, and Trail Riding Communication Kit [MC-HX370V] - $399.00 : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Drag Racing, NASCA

The HX370 handheld radios are on sale right now for $150.00 so that would bring down the price significantly.

The other way to do it would be to go with a one headset linking to the handheld radio for you or your wife.

Crew Chief Headset and Vertex HX370 VHF Radio [CREW-HX] - $400.00 : Rugged Radios: Headsets, Intercoms, 2-Way Racing Radios and Communication for Motorcycles, Offroad, Circle Track, Drag Racing, NASCAR, Police, and more...

Feel free to give us a call here at the office and we can go over everything. We are running some sales right now and don't forget the RZR forum discount as well!

Thanks,
Jason

Re: 2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure these are great systems, but I'm looking for something on a MUCH smaller budget.

Is there a helmet mounted unit like the Scala or Chatterbox that will transmit to and receive from a 2 way radio instead of a second helmet mounted unit?

Re: 2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

Your best bet would be motocomm, get the helmet kit, has a ptt button that will mount to the handlebars and they transmit on frs freq. and you can use the handheld in the rzr.

Re: 2 way radio for Utv to Atv.

After doing some research it appears that the chatterbox frs and gmrs units are compatible with handhelds of the same type. I think we are going to try an frs for my sons helmet and I already have a pair of Midland frs/gmrs radios we can use on the Rzr. Just need to pick up a $10 headset or 2.

Quick update.
I ended up buying a refurbished Frs-Hjc full face Chatterbox on eBay for $72 for my sons helmet. It has 2 channels and they correspond to Ch1 and Ch8 on my Midland Frs radios. My son is always within sight of us when we ride (12 and still learning) so this works perfectly. The Chatterbox is very clear and we can use the Midland radios with or without headsets depending on whether we are wearing helmets or not. You do tend to lose the first couple words spoken with the vox feature unless you make noise to trigger the mic first so we choose to use the handlebar mounted ptt button. For shorter range usage, this is a great low cost alternative to the $1000 and up setups.
