GPS

Received a TomTom GPS for Xmas, are these things programable for off road, trail riding, or sand dunes? Can you program coordinants to find your way around glamis dunes? or is this thing just for the street?

Re: GPS

Well, I ended up doing some checking on it before I opened the box and found out you can program coordinates. Cant wait to check it out in the dunes, not bad for $150 if it works out there also.

Re: GPS

i use a true gps unit i bought from bass pro, think it is a garmin. real affordable unit @ about 75.00 or 100.00. and there is a web site that offers specific mounts for all gps units. picked up a mount for 30 or 40 dollars, and just used some 3m dbl side tape to fix it to the top of the dash right next to the frt left downpost of the rollcage. its ez visible, but yet not in your way as far as looking around it to drive. the nice thing about a true gps is that it will record your progress or track as you go which comes in handy when we are on a new trail. when finished with new trail i save track and label it with a trail name and then i have a plotted trail map with every turn right on the screen if we decide to run it again. this way it doesnt take long to map a whole park and you dont have to keep stopping and pulling out a "paper" map to find where you are and how to "get back to the truck"

just my thoughts

Re: GPS

This mount is made for a garmin etrex. Its an IMS (as in IMS gas tanks etc) for a dirt bike, I just take the bar mount off when I put it on the rzr. I had to drill out the sides to make room for the buttons on my vista cx. It's simple and clean.

I like the trip statistics like top speed, average moving speed and elevations.

Re: GPS

I like the true off road Gps and may eventually still get one for trail riding, but I received my tomtom for x mas for on road use and if I can use it off road, I might as well give it a try.

Re: GPS

Here's a photo of the Lowerance 540C I believe. This was done my SDHQ. I'll probably go with the same area and mount. The passenger can easily see over the GPS and the driver can see the screen as well. It doesn't come in contact with the grab bar.

Nice job on all of them. GPS is so cool. I have the Garmin 60CS. I have Roads and Recreation on it. It has all the Forest Service roads and even private driveways on it. I always know where I am.

Re: GPS

Garmin Garmin baby.I've had a XL12,street pilot and now the 176C.Soaked em froze em rolled machines over on em,allways takes me home. Map source is the soft wear gives every water way, road, rail road, elivation. When you get home, plug it in down load tracks and ad to map set so 2 years latter you go back to that area ride every were you went is a big red line or any collor you wish it to be.Then just for kicks overlay it on google earth and see were you were.I like the 176 cause it holds miles and miles of tracks, great for boondocking just look down see a previous track, its not to far away make your own trail through the sticks it's not like your gona get lost you got a bread crum trail every were you go.Just load maps for the area you're riding, when I first got it I loaded it with maps of all the places I ride,to much info. The curser{you are here icon}could not keep up with the map,you would stop riding and GPS would show me still moving until it caught up to were I was.A real pain when your looking for a trail and you passed it up 1/4 mile ago.

Re: GPS

Arctic Rzr is that a RAM mount clamped to your column?
RAM makes the most rugged mounts. Rock solid, adjustable and they have a mind melting assortment of mounts & bases to fit nearly anything you can hold in your hand (no pun intended).

Re: GPS

I use the Lowrance 540c mounted in a RPM fab underdash box. Great for finding camp at the DUnes in the evening.
