Re: any upgrades for the stock charging system?
Alternators don't like mud
But seriously Polaris claims 500W for the stator but many folks find their "battery" idiot light comes on with only the headlights on. Does it take 500W to operate the ignition, fuel pump and headlights?? Maybe Ricky Stator is working on this problem right now...

Re: any upgrades for the stock charging system?
Install a good sized battery, run the accessories off it and you shouldn't trip or overload the alternator lamp.

My battery idiot light comes on with all stock electric. It's either over-rated or the battery sucks.

Re: any upgrades for the stock charging system?
you can buy the polaris service manual and it tells ya all about the charging system and how to test the system with all the lights on ect so you can see how many rpms your motor has to be running to produce a charge I think it was around 3000 rpm with the lights on ect to produce a charge...I was going to check into led taillight bulbs to save some wattage

Re: any upgrades for the stock charging system?
You can also take your current alternator to any alt/gen rebuild company and have then rewind your alternator for better charging right off idle. I have a lot of gadgets and have found the stock system work fine, just a bigger better battery.

LOW BATTERY AND OVER VOLTAGE
this warning means that the vehicle is operating at a rpm too low to keep the battery charged. It may also occur when the engine is at idle and high electrical loads (Lights, cooling fan, accessories) is applied. Drive at higher rpm or recharge the battery to clear the warning.
So even polaris say you drive to slow ...................

OK, so we know there isn't enough RPM to keep the battery charged, but does it start blinking at a certain voltage or does it actually read that there is more amps going out that there is coming in?

Re: any upgrades for the stock charging system?
It starts blinking at a low voltage and or over voltage
if you go out and put a volt meter on the battery with the key off it should read 12.4 volts or more if its not I would charge the battery first
if you have installed a bunch of acc. you can take the ground off the battery put a volt amp meter on DCAmps inbetween the ground post on the battery and the and the battery lead and that will tell you current draw it should not be over .01 dca (ma)
if it was me id test the battery first after charging the battery
load test
hook up the volt meter to the pos and neg on the battery with key off after charging it should read 12.6 or greater if so crank the engine for 15 seconds with the meter still hooked up and during cranking if the voltage drops below 9.5 volts you need a new battery from utvcrap.com
