Battery tending

Has anyone plugged in a battery tender thru a 12v socket (hooked up direct to the battery) to maintain their battery? It seems like you should be able to attach a 12v plug to the battery tender and plug it into the socket eliminate the need to remove the battery. Thinking doing this but want to know of any possible issues.

Re: Battery tending

The "lighter" socket turns off with the ignition. Sorry.

Re: Battery tending

Sorry for not explaining further. I am installing a secondary 12v socket direct to the battery so it wont disconnect/connect with the ignition. I plan to use it for GPS etc. I am thinking it should work also as a battery tender connection.

Re: Battery tending

Then yes. I think some tenders come with a lighter plug for that. I use the 2-pin rubber connector but have to remove the seat. Been thinking of moving the pigtail up front to the winch wiring since it's direct to the battery.

Re: Battery tending

I've been doing that for years on bikes. In the Winter it's nice to run a heated jacket off of the plug and when I hop off the battery tender plug goes right in. Todd

Re: Battery tending

I was thinking of disconnecting my 12 volt lighter and using that wire for my Oil /water temp / volt / air fuel gauge, then take the lighter that’s there now and put it in the top right hand corner or in the middle by the GPS, I would make it full time hot, then I could use it for a tender when its parked in the garage until my next ride.

Re: Battery tending

Mine's not parked enough! Haha.

I have battery tenders on watercraft. They are wired directly to the battery and secured on the vehicle all the time. There's pleanty of room to put something like that on the RZR, and run the 110 cord somewhere convienient.

Otherwise, if your lighter is hot all the time, I don't see why that wouldn't work. I think I've seen solar ones too, but that's no good in a garage.

Re: Battery tending

Right, I use the solar ones in my Suzuki Samurai and my Tow Vehicle - I also conceder using a solar in the garage, just connect a long cord to the panel, run it thru a roof vent and set it on the roof.

I wasn't sure how good that would work with 40' of cord.

Re: Battery tending

If you have a winch up front you already have wires run straight to the battery.

Otherwise...That's a good idea to change the center wire on the lighter socket to one that's hot all the time. Problem is there's none under the dash, stock. You'll need to add a wire to the fuse block.
