Winch Wiring Help

i bought and installed a 4k winch off ebay, when the wires are connected to the battery it burns the ends of the hot wire, as if it were grounded on the other end. i informed the company, they sent a new solenoid and still has the same problem. everything is wired as it should be. any suggestions? thanks

You may need to give a little more detail to us if you want help....I can only suggest this "It's not wired as it should be" !!! You have something on the wrong leg. What kind of winch is it?

Re: Winch Wiring Help

I thought the same thing but i've looked over and over it and everything is wired as it should be, the solenoid is color coded as are the wires that connect to it, and where they connect to the winch motor. The winch brand is xtreme, other than that it didn't come with a schematic, like i said everything is color coded so it's pretty fool-proof. My guess is now that it's got to be in the motor itself... thanks

Re: Winch Wiring Help

I am assuming you probably have the venom winch. Same as me because I had the same problem when I wired it per the directions sent. I don't remember which wires were backwards on the schematic but there are two that have to switched. I believe it was the blue and? Look at it closely . I had to scratch my head a few times but finally figured it out. If you can't figure it out let me know and I'll gom out and take a look at mine.

Re: Winch Wiring Help

I was thinking the same thing when I had the same problem but can pretty much bet it is wired wrong. you are trying to connect a ground to hot.

Re: Winch Wiring Help

ok, If yours is like mine there is a red blue and yellow cable (8 or 10 g) and a few small wires that will only connect one way. The red wire goes where it is supposed to go. The yellow and blue wires need to be switched on the solenoid from how you have them now. That is what was wrong with mine. Hope that helps ler me know.

Try disconecting the pos/neg at the battery, then change the 2 leads at the winch and try re-connecting the pos/neg at the battery. See if that does it???

Re: Winch Wiring Help

Ok I went back and looked at mine closely. I have the exact same solenoid as you. Like you I had the same problem I couldnt hook up the hot wire it was a dead short. I had to try trial and error until I figured it out. The color coded decal on the solenoid is WRONG ignore it. Looking at your pic you need to do the following.
The cables on the winch motor are attached to the winch correctly red on top and black on bottom. Moving to the inside to the solenoid. As you have it wired now in the pic you need to swap the red and blue cables. And swap the yellow and blue. working from top to bottom with the small terminals being to your right as you look at the solenoid it will be from top to bottom. Red then moving down blue then black then the lowerst will be the yellow. On the battery connect the blue to positive and yellow to ground. The small wires should be attached with the jumper wire from the small middle post over to the bottom post where the yellow wire will be attached. The small black wire at top is correct as you have it. Lastly the other green wire on the bottom small screw goes to the harness. This is how mine is wired . Took me quite a while to figure this out. Even though we have different brand decals on the winches I bet they are exactly the same .
