switchable taillights
I want to make my taillights turn on and off with my headlights or on a seperate switch. Has anyone done this. I think that all I need to do is cut the wire and run wires to the front and install switch. Any suggestions?

Re: switchable taillights
why do you want to do this? if it's to free up power you'll only save 10 watts

Re: switchable taillights
I know in the 50's and 60' racers did this so there comp could not follow there race line and braking zone. It made for interesting races. Maybe 507rzr just wants to make sure when they brake to get away from someone you cant see them. LOL..

Re: switchable taillights
I dont want to do it to stoplamps, just taillights. For stealth mode on night cruises.

Re: switchable taillights
you would actually save 7 watts per bulb as the tail light bulbs are 7 watt tail/27 watt brake

Don't snowmobiles leave the proverbial "bread crumb trail" ... kinda defeats the purpose.... IMO

Re: switchable taillights
I just ran over my taillight when the bed was off. know they never work problem solved. Yeah running from the cops on a snowmobile. Hmm if you need a snowmobile is seems it would be to bad for cars anyway. IDK still sounds like fun to me

Re: switchable taillights
To answer the question...Nothing is ever easy with Polaris. The headlights are switched through the Lights switch to 12V. The other wire on both lights is of course frame ground. But the rear lights are opposite. The Stop, Tail and Work lights all get 12V through the "box harness" connector (located on the upper frame rail above the filter housing) and the grounds are switched.
SO if you wanted to switch off the tail lights but still allow the brake lights to work you would have to add a new switch to the dash, cut the brown wire on the tail light socket and run a pair of wires all the way to the dash. Plus add a connector so you can remove the bed without pulling out the tail light sockets.
OR you could trace the brown wire from the box harness connector through the harness inside the plastic split loom jacket and try to identify which of the many identical brown wires bolted to the frame near the battery is the right one and cut that one & run wires to a new switch in the dash.
Still wanna do it?

Re: switchable taillights
Update!! I did end up with my taillights switched, but for a different reason than hiding in the dark. I wanted my lights to turn off while stopped so they do not cause extra batt draw while my stereo is on. I ended up putting a normally closed switch in the gear shifter linkage. Now when my ride is in park the taillights are off, anywhere but park and the lights come on. I could have just mounted a toggle switch but that would have ben too easy. The more complicated something is the neater it is.
