is anyone running an aftermarket battery on their razor? i have been looking at the odyssey batteries. what other kinds are yall running? looking for stock size battery but high output. thanks
Where do you get your info? Neither the Odyssey website or the East-Penn site describe either battery as a Deep Cycle or Starting battery. They both are the same type (ACM), have very similar CCA & amp-hour ratings, similar size and weight. When researching the topic online you find there is so much overlap in the construction of batteries that the labels "Deep Cycle" or "Starting" become meaningless. I haven't been able to locate a head-to-head test of these batteries. I'm a little surprised about that since this size is found in several ATV's, watercraft and many Harleys. Lot of very picky people with an interest in getting the best replacement possible. I did find a reference to a test conducted by a motorcycle magazine but I couldn't locate the original article. Here's the forum post:
Wing World did a test on batteries a while back, the manufacturer of the Odyssey was making a lot of wild claims about the performance of the battery, and Wing World wanted to find out if the Odyssey battery lived up to its exaggerated advertising.
The test compared the maintenance free batteries that were available, all the batteries use the exact same technology. The results? The Odyssey was highest priced battery in the test, and came in dead last in performance. The Westco came in first in performance, the DEKA wasn't available at the time but was tested a couple of months later and compared, the article in Wing World said the DEKA battery outperformed all the batteries they had tested.
The conclusions are simple, the two top performing batteries were the DEKA and the Westco, the overpriced Odyssey wasn't even in the running.
OEM GL1800 battery - 19 amp-hour, 270CCA
Odyssey PC545 for GL1800 - 12 amp-hour, 185CCA, 18 minutes reserve capacity.

There are lots of forums & magazines doing battery tests, some seem fair, some technically questionable. I'd like to see someone with the proper equipment do a head-to-head test of the Odyssey PC925, the East-Penn ETX30L (Deka, Magna Power, Big Crank and a bunch of rebranded autoparts store names), and Yuasa/Interstate YIX30L.
I wouldnt buy anything but an optima blue top marine battery have tried odyssey and optima both in the past including some off brands....you guys need to know what you are looking for in a battery for each application... You dont need cranking Power!!! you need reserve power its not a 7.3 diesel pickup starting in the middle of winter its a 800 cc fuel injected motor.... i have 2 red top optimas in my diesel and i have a optima blue top in my rzr red batteries have more cranking and less reserve and vice versa for the blue top.. (blue top and yellow top specs are the same except blue top has an extra set of battery studs with wingnuts.. and by the way there is no alternator on a rzr .. there is a stator.. big difference and by the way my battery does not weigh 50 lbs as stated earlier not sure where you are gettin your information.. and the 5 extra pounds shouldnt matter the guys wanting stereos and winches are more than likely not racing and that little weight will never effect them... i have hid headlights, 4000lb winch, mtx wakeboard tower speakers W/ an amp also (big difference than running off deck power) was just recently at an outdoor event not only was my stereo the loudest one there it was on and cranked for over 6 hours with the machine off... i am also running an isolator switch with my stock battery so it didnt matter if i ran it dead anyways....so once again in this situation a rzr needs reserve power not cranking power i dont care if the battery you buy has 2000 cca you will never be able to use the full potential anyway
oh by the way one more important thing i have ran a odyssy battery completely dead and had problems with it taking charge ever after that... you will never have that problem with a deep cycle blue top optima...
I just wanted just a little more juice so i got the etx30l, $89 shipped to Miami, from Battery Giant. I have only a winch and don't want anything else. My 10/07 built rzr is used for deep woods trails most of the time. this etx30l fit like a glove in my rzr. I just have fab or buy a battery top hold down from an 2008 ranger to keep the battery from moving up.
Sorry just broke digital camera otherwise would give pics... will post some soon... i bought a aftermarket battery box made for the rzr specifically for the optima installed that in stock battery location then i put my stock battery in storage box beside stock location and just fabricated a holding strap.. very simple and clean... remember a big key and advantage to my setup is the isolator switch... the switch makes it so when the key is off you just have power from the optima... so you can run stereo and whatever else you hook up to it with the key off. when key is on you have power from both batteries... allowing you to run optima dead (by accident... long drinking nights arpound campfire lead to this) and then be able to fire your machine right up using the stock battery... used this safety feature more than once already.... the 50 -$75 for the switch has already paid for itself in my situation
battery box is made by rpm products or something got it off ebay there is several mentions about the box on the forums..... and yes you have to trim plastic to fit the optima... couldnt even tell it has been done unless you seen it before... it took me all of 15 seconds to do with my mini air saw... i am a pefectioist when it comes to wiring and details and very picky and i was very pleased with how it turned out..... anyone that will be at the black hills utv rally this weekend is happy to check it out ... will be sportin new cage, bumpers and paint job also
I have had very bad luck with Optima batteries which is a real shame, they are built here in Colorado.
I had a friend who worked for Optima when they first started up, I could get factory blemishes for half price, they all worked wonderfully, years of service never a hickup.
Then about 5 years later I had to buy my own Optima's he no longer worked there. Nothing but problems. I have had 4 red tops lose a cell, producing only 11 volts. I have had a yellow top fail to hold a charge and a blue top quit working after 6 months.
Odyssey batteries are to expensive. I bought a Werker battery and a secondary battery for my accessories for my 2013 900. Fits like a glove. And it's about 100 cheaper than an odyssey.
I dont mind the money and seems like everyone is going with these and have used them alot so I decided these are the ones Im going with but didnt know wether to get the L or not and which terminals I might need when ordering.
optima battery is 41lbs - odessey is 24lbs, that = 17lbs more weight on drivers side. I agree always had red tops in all my Jeeps was leaning to the 34/78 red top for my Rzr but thinking I don't want the extra weight. not sure what to do.
Why pay 180 for a battery when you can purchase the Werker battery that is a sealed battery for 90 bucks. I have a SSV radio, amp and 30" light bar running to it with a 200amp isolator. Your paying for the oddessy name, that's it. And the Werker battery needs nothing. I'll post a pic of mine with the battery number. You can get Werker batteries at any Batteries plus store.
you are not buying an odyssey for the name only they are rock solid batteries that last YEARS they are the same company that makes stinger batteries at a much bigger markup (that would be a battery bought for their name)
Totally agree...I bought the Oddessy for the 2008 RZR and ran it with stereo, amp and winch in Louisiana heat and sold it two years later with the RZR and ran into the guy not long ago and he had just replaced it with another only because the winch switch shorted.
