Re: Dual Batteries
If you just want to run dual batteries, then run the ground to the ground and the positive to the positive. Some people put isolator switches on them to keep them seperate.

Re: Dual Batteries
I run two batteries on my boat and use an isolater/disconnect switch. Works great. As soon as I have time I am going to duplicate on the RZR. You can get the parts at most auto supply stores and they are inexpensive. This setup allows you to run Battery "A", Battery "B" or both. I am going to add another factory size battery due to weight and space considerations. This setup is especially useful if you are using a stereo or lights while parked. You can use battery "A" to run the accessories and if power runs low you turn the switch to battery "B" to start the machine and switch to "all" to charge both while running.

Re: Dual Batteries
I installed a second battery in my 08' RZR. I have the dual PIAA lights from Polaris on the front brush guard, and dual lights mounted on the roof. When I was running just the stock battery the lights would dim really bad when the fan kicked on and if I used the winch at all the battery light for low voltage would come on. I picked up a second 600 amp battery on sale and it made a huge difference. I can run all 6 lights and use the winch and the battery light never comes on. Even when it was bone stock you could see the stock lights dim when the fan kicked on, but now no matter what accessories Im running the lights never dim. I know that no matter what battery or batteries you install, the RZR doesnt charge very fast because the mag only puts out so much power. So installed a quick connect port for my 2 amp battery tender that is located on the side of the drivers seat. I have always plugged my quads into a battery tender when I parked them in the garage anyway, especially with our cold winters here in Michigan. Last weekend I ran it for about 7 hours with all the lights on, and used the winch on and off through the day. When I got home I plugged it into the charger and it took about 15 minutes before it showed fully charged. I only spent about $45 on the whole set up. It sure seemed to take the load off the stock system. I would highly recommend either upgrading the stock battery or installing a secondary battery, your RZR will thank you.................

Re: Dual Batteries
I'm still not having any problems with my stock battery - 5 PIAA lights and winch amongst other things. Only mod I have done to help the battery is add a switch to turn off rear lights and brake lights (not needed off road unless trail riding), I don't think it accounts for much but does give the stator an easier time. I will have to see how things go now the nights are drawing in.
I don't use trickle chargers / battery tenders anymore, instead I use a higher current charge which I use periodically if the voltage drops below a certain amount. More sophisticated chargers may work better to be left plugged in constantly, but certainly the cheaper ones just apply a constant charge which isn't necessarily a good thing particulary on the smaller stock battery that the RZR comes with. I'm still looking for a programmable charger where you can define the voltage startup/shutdown points and the amount of charge to apply - though I guess any such device is unlikely to be cheap.

Re: Dual Batteries
The battery tender I have will slow charge from 1 - 2 amps and when the battery is fully charged it will shut off until the voltage drops. I agree you definitely do not want a battery tender that is constantly charging. I mainly added the secondary battery because I plan on spending a lot of time plowing at night this winter, which means I will also be using the winch constantly............

Re: Dual Batteries
Just a FYI ...
if the batteries are not same make and size, they will have different impedance and the one that has the less impedance will discharge when sitting connected to the other. So when you start it (after sitting not being charged) ... and it will most likely start... you will be at full output on a already strained charging system, trying to charge what you think is two good batteries. One will not be!!

Re: Dual Batteries
So CW, are you reccommending running 2 stock batteries versus say a stock and a Odyssey 925? What you say makes sense but trying to figure out how to get the most life out of whatever setup I end up going with. I always use the tender when parked and will try to plug it into the RV when camped. I have a couple amps, speakers and 2 - 4" HID's.
Thanks in advance for the advise...

Re: Dual Batteries
It is only going to effect people that have there RZR sitting for long periods of time with out charging or running. If you have a battier disconnect switch(that disconnects the two from each other) ... you wont have that problem at all when parked(put to bed). Just remember ... if you cant produce the same amount of wattage that you are using ... then you need a bigger reserve(duals)... there is no other way around it. Baja Designs makes rewound stators for allot of bikes/quads and it doubles the output ... but I don't know if they have one for the RZR yet. I am sure it is just a mater of time ... or if the can be rewound. I have even looked at what on my RZR yet.
hope this helps! I dont know for sure if it would because of the voltage regulator isues..
STATOR REWINDING
Baja Designs offers top quality in house stator rewinding for increased lighting coil output. Our rewinds are race tested and are warrantied against failure indefinitely.
Pricing ranges from $90 to $150 for most applications. Average turnaround time is 3-5 working days once your stator arrives however it can take longer during periods of heavy volume (usually in the weeks prior to major night racing events.) Please call to confirm our current turnaround time.
We do not offer exchanges as most stators have ignition windings on the same unit.
Please call our tech support department at 760.560.2252 to discuss the rewind specifics/options for your bike before sending in your stator.
*Do not send your stator without calling first as an order confirmation number must first be assigned.
*We do not offer rewind service for non-US model XR's.
