Rugged Radios Intercomm

Hey there, I just got my Rugged Radio Intercomm and I just wanted to say it is definately the best mod I have done so far. I got the helmet kit instead of the headphones. Let me tell you this. The music blares through the helmet. No more yelling at your passenger. Definately a great product and a great company to deal with. Here are a couple of pictures of my install.

Here is picture of the bracket I had made up. I mounted the bracket to the two spars underneath the dash.

Next I removed the center console to run the wires back to the battery.

I ran the helmet lines up the middle to each seat. This could be temporary placement though.

Once again, awesome product. The only problem I ran into was that the power wires supplied were not long enough. I had to add 3 feet. If the guys at rugged lengthened the wires the product would be perfect.
Thanks to my buddy Rusty SHITTHEAD (pronounced SH-THEAD) who helped me out and provided the beers. CHEERS guys

Looks good. I hope they re-run their special soon. Missed out on the last one, and I agree, this is an excellent addition.

Re: Rugged Radios Intercomm

awesome set up. I need to get one myself one of these days from them or PCI. So on your wire routing...you sure those wires arent to close to your radiator hoses? I think if its sitting on the radiator hoses, especially the aluminum tubes that could pose an issue?

Re: Rugged Radios Intercomm

I've had both kits, the PCI and the Rugged on my last ride. Nothing wrong with the PCI, but I do think the intercom and headsets on the Rugged are better. I REALLY like the new headsets they have with the separate volume on each headset. You crank up the volume on the music, and driver/passenger can adjust it to where they both like it.

I just got my kit sent to me and will be making custom plates and bracket kits for the RZR installs. I'm thinking on the passenger side dash...but I'm still thinking on the location and will work on it this weekend.

Rugged also set me up with an external speaker with a seperate power switch built into the speaker so you can turn it on when you park and listen to anyone else who was on the radio while you're parked and not wearing your headsets! I'll be sure to post pics of the install when it's done

Forgot....I'm a Rugged and PCI dealer...just need to get the Rugged kits up now that I've got the pics I needed from them for UTV kits.

Re: Rugged Radios Intercomm

ill go with whatever company offers us a sponsorship or a great deal on a system =) I need to make sure whatever intercom I go with I can use a Vertex radio with and still have the option to use a speaker with the Vertex radio instead of the headsets. There is a time/place to use headsets and a time/place where headsets are not an option when working certain assignments but I would still need to be able to listen to the search radio.

Re: Rugged Radios Intercomm

I just got my rugged radio sets for my rzr's last week. I need to get the radios in a water proof container. Any ideas? I would like to get them hooked up for this weekend but we do see water and mud.

Re: Rugged Radios Intercomm

Thanks for noticing that. I had a look and the wires are further from the radiator hoses than it looks in the photos. I don't think they would get hot enough to bother the wires anyways but who wants to take the chance.
I too was looking at a way of putting the intercomm up higher possibly in the roll cage to avoid any problems with deep mud or water. For now I'm not doing any chest high water crossings.

Rugged does sell their kits with the Vertex radio, but they still do not program or mod the radio to use either the speaker or headsets. What I do is reach up behind the radio and slightly pull out the plug that goes to the intercom and then the speaker will work. Its really easy to get to since the plug is on the drivers side rear upper corner. But an inline A/B toggle for an 1/8" mini jack would fix it too... PCI mods the radio so you can use either or with a push of a button and I wish Rugged would do that as well. I will say the Rugged intercom is better sounding than the PCI.

Thanks for that!

We make an external speaker that has an on/off switch on it and a splitter to plug into the back of the radio. We dont modify the Vertex to have the audio play out the speaker because it will void the warranty through Vertex... bad!
