My new overhead stereo build

So a few days ago I started building a new stereo enclosure for my xp1K.

I started by building a frame out of 1x2 pine to go around the inside of the top of the cage. The piece on top is just a trmpoary hanger to help hold it in si i can take measurements

Re: My new overhead stereo build

I am using a JVC KD-X80BT head unit.
Ichose to go with a head unit for a few reasons.
I like having a radio, I like the hands free bluetooth phone feature . This unit does not have a cd to allow dust to get inside. It comes with 4 pre outs to go to the amp

Re: My new overhead stereo build

For the Amp i went with the phoenix Gold TI-1000.4 it will run at 150watts x4 channels @ 4ohms . I went with 4 Polk Audio 6x9's to get as much bass as possible without adding a sub.

Re: My new overhead stereo build

After i was happy with my woodwork i covered the whole thing with fleece . I usually just use old t shirts but thought i would try the fleece this tine. Honestly i like the tshirt material better. Its easier to conform to corners and thinner so it comes out smoother.

Re: My new overhead stereo build

After drying overnight its time to sand down the resin. Its alot easier to knock down the high points and finish with a bedliner coating ans your done but i prefer the smooth glossy finish so hours of sanding it id

Re: My new overhead stereo build

Next comes the bondo. Resin is always wavy and rough so i get a rough shape and smooth it somwhat with 36 grit then coat the whole thing with a thin coat of fillet. Dont use cheap filler it will lift and crack. After knocking down the body filler then i go back and spot fill the places that need adittional shaping or leveling

Re: My new overhead stereo build

I start with 36 grit to get the rough shape and speed the process then 80 grit to smooth it then 220 and finally 320 to get rid of most of the derp scratches. When i'm happy with it the time for a couple good heavy coats of primer/ surfacer. After a few hours of drying time i start sanding with 220 grit to level the primer and then ginish with 320 dry. Since this will be black taking the time to eleminate scratches will pay off in the final look.
