Foam filled roll cage stronger?
Do you guys think that filling roll gage with expanding foam would help to increase strength. May be a cheap way to make quick improvement. What do you think?

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
It will not increases the strength of the tube enough to help. You are talking about tube that has a, before 2009, 50,000 lbs tensile strength and 2009 and newer, 65K tensile strength. What do you think the tensile strength of 1 1/2 round foam might be? 3 or 5 lbs. If you are thinking that it might help it from deforming the tube, thus making it stronger ... If you are bending that tube ... the foam isn't going to slow it down enough to even measure!

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
It will add strength. Try this--you'll be surprised: Take 2 McDonald straws and fill one with expanding foam. Let it cure a day then bend each one in the middle.
Some truck manufacturers have been injecting foam in their roof rails to increase strength without adding weight.

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
yes the use of expanding foam for additional strength is not a new concept. how much i don't claim to know, but it will add some beef to the cage.

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
There is no way that on .090 or .120 tube ...that the time spent getting it in is worth the amout it adds ... I would have to see the test data to belive anyone!

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
you guys have it all wrong!!!
you have to add 300psi of Helium for strength and it will lighten you overall weight.

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
LMFAO ....!!!
You are talking about filling something that has tensile strength of less then what you are filling it with. So it would work on a straw.
Not the same for 50k or 65k tensile strength tube ... the gains would not be worth while.
That is some funny $hit ... you guys
Don't forget to fill the tire also with Helium .... they spin faster!

Re: Foam filled roll cage stronger?
to the poster, yes you can add foam and it will add significant strength to the cage. it is a common practice. you guys joke....but it really works. here is a sample of foam they use in pontoon boats.
16 LB Density Urethane Foam
Common Applications: This 16LB density foam is essentially as hard as a rock, you would need a hammer in order to make any dents in this product. Can be used for sculpting or the casting of objects that require superior toughness and strength.
Free Rise Density: 16.0 lbs cubic ft.
Expansion Rate: Approx. 4x Liquid Volume
Buoyancy (flotation): 46 LBs per Cubic Ft.
*Physical Properties:
Parallel Compressive Strength: 580 psi
Tensile Strength: 450 psi
Shear Strength: 230 psi
Flexural Strength: 750 psi
the flex strength is excellent, just what a cage needs. in fact, here is a 8lb foam, half the strength of the first posted foam........
This 8LB density foam is extremely hard and rigid, like that of a soft wood. Your fingernail can penetrate its skin, however it cannot be dented by hand. Uses include casting, carving, sculpting, sign making as well as areas where an extremely durable and rigid foam is needed for support. More questions?
