Re: ok I wanna buy a new RZR bad... help
you guys can stay home and worry about the dust, I've not seen any dust in my intake. this topic is old, Keep the clamps tight and run it. These filter issues are overblown. Do you think filter elements just came out or suddenly stopped working. These same paper filament style filters are sold on almost every vehicle made. check the clamps after the first couple of rides. In fact check almost all the bolts you can cause sometimes they wiggle loose and need to be retightend after breakin has been done. You should be fine!!!

Well your credibility on this forum just went down the drain. Check out page 30 of the latest "Quad" magazine. (Nov 08) "The Polaris RZR comes with the cheapest non-cleanable paper air filters we have ever seen". That is a word for word quote from the editors of a reputable source. So, do you care to retract the following statement? "Do you think filter elements just came out or suddenly stopped working. These same paper filament style filters are sold on almost every vehicle made". (You should do a little research before posting false statements)
Wow...Let me know when your top end needs to be rebuilt. Please tell Polaris that "These filter issues are overblown". I'm sure they would disagree since they are rebuilding my motor for free due to the "overblown dust issue". I'm glad you have not seen any problems. Since "you" have not seen dust....maybe everyone who has dust problems needs to read your post and realize we can now leave our homes and finally ride worry free . Get over yourself! For the other RZR owners who ride their machines in dusty conditions; It is wise to invest in a Dragon Fire Racing or UMP aftermarket air box. If the "overblown" intake issues were in fact "overblown", Polaris would not be adding 18 months to my warranty, rebuilding my motor for free and releasing updates to fix all the RZR's intake problems.
West coast people most likely won't see the same dust issues as we see in the central or east coast. IMO, a few hundred dollars for a proven fix is money well spent.
GEARHEAD, If you are going to upgrade to the UMP, I would do it before you take in on the trails. Why chance having the stock filter letting dust in your motor? I had dust in mine after the first ride. Not worth the risk IMO.

I see a lot of people recommending the dragon fire intake and haven't heard much about adding snorkels instead. Do snorkels not work as good as the Dragon fire intake? I've added extreme snorkels on mine but haven't ridden in much dust since....wondering if I should get the intake instead.

Dry filter, easy to clean.

There are some on this forum who have had luck with the snorkels. Since you already added snorkels, i would try them out and see if they stop the dust. If you notice dust getting into the rubber intake boot behind your filter, then the UMP/DFR cannister is a great fix.

I'm sorry about your woes wiyh the dust in your motor I will stand by my statement. As for being in the dust these same type of filters are on other atvs without issue(what about the sportsman 800) why in the rzr???Have you ever been riding in the desert there is nothing but dust and sand. How can you say we dont have the same as you. The aftermarket filters that most of the guys use were designed here on the west coast because of desert racing. I think alot parts may have been defective from polaris, if this is the case than you have a lagitamate claim for repair. I my have lost credability in your eye's, oh well, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. Most of the people who contributed to this topic have never even had an actual problem with dust, several have said that the rubber boot came loose and to change clamps. others have said there was a hole in boot, I think polaris installed bad parts on some rzrs. You suggest parking the rzr until you upgrade fine don't attack me for telling the guy to try and enjoy his investment. If it blows he can always get in on the class action lawsuit, right!!

Re: ok I wanna buy a new RZR bad... help
The RZR and Sportsman 800 are completely different OHV's. I have not rode in the desert so thanks for clearing that up. This is why this forum is so great. Everyone can share ideas and thoughts. I hope you don't ever have the issues I have had...

Re: ok I wanna buy a new RZR bad... help
Whoow!
I know this is a heated topic ... but is this not a forum to share are thought and ideas, to help each other out? The idea is to express your findings and results, without trying to jam them down each others throats. Like I said, I KNOW this has been a bad spot or touchy subject with allot of RZR owners ... this whole air cleaner thing. Polaris knows it is ... or they wouldn't of made any changes in the 09's
With that said ... I have had my 09 RZR S in some really F'd up silt for hours, just to see if I had any problems with the AC. I have yet to find any dust/dirt/grim get past the AC. I do have the new design AC from Polaris. Does this mean I am going to trust it 100 percent ... hell no!! I am going to keep checking ... and post my results/findings. As of right now ... I am NOT going to buy a aftermarket AC ... but it doesn't mean I will never change it out. I really like the looks of some of the aftermarket AC ... besides there function. There are so many different ridding/driving conditions across this wonderful country ... no one person can be right for everyone!
Just my thoughts ...

Re: ok I wanna buy a new RZR bad... help
well, I rode it for about 2 hours, so hope its ok.
My rzr has the old style intake on it. There supposed to send me the updated one.
Is there an advantage to the ump vs the dfr? or do they work that same?
will they keep water and mud out the same?

I have the red sealed DFR cannister and it is designed for water/mud. So far it has worked well. There are lots of threads on the forum about DFR and Ump. They seem to both work well from what people have reported. I believe the UMP is a little cheaper. Check out the DFR vs UMP thread.

ok guys, do I order a DFR or UMP. I will be in trails all the time, and I dont want to worry about dust or mud intrusion.
