BTI vs FDR Air Intake

It seems to me that the air intakes offered by BTI and DFR both address the Polaris engineering mishap. So the questions becomes how should a person choose between the two?

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

OK then BTI/DFR vs. UMP. Same type of filter, different color housing. Is that the only difference besides the $499 vs. $325 price?

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

Dang good question! What does the $175 buy you other than a
red canister and a billet connector? From web site pictures it looks like they are both functionally the same unit? It appears that they both use the same Donaldson filter? I too am confused Someone help us out here....................

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

I dont see a difference except design. I bought a UMP. I have it sitting right here with me. Its great in quality! All the aluminium welds are perfect. The only thing you have to do is modify your oval intake hole in your box to a round hole for the 3 inch rubber intake hose. The UMP bolts in two locations on the motor, giving it great structure, and the filter is easy to change. Everything you need is included with the setup.
I dont know much about the others, Im sure they are good as well, but I went for the best bang for the buck option and Im extremely happy I did.
Great Job UMP!!!!!

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

Ok, so I still see two main choices BTI/DFR or UMP. I know where to get the BTI/DFR kit from, but I could find an exact kit from UMP for the RZR. How and from where are guys getting the UMP kit? I found I write up on the install on UTV Guide. It appears they got it directly from UMP, but I couldn't find an exact kit on their site? I want a good Idea how much it costs verses the BTI.

The UMP website needs work drasticly! No one can figure out anything there. Check out offroadwarehouse.com. They have a good price on the UMP kit.

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

the ump looks to be smaller dimensions then my DFR. Anyone who has one if you could post the size of both the canister and the donaldson air filter they are using. I have never seen the UMP in pics on the RZR and from the pics on offroadwarehouse.com they look to be smaller than the DFR. Like I said though it may just be the pics. Lets hear some info from the UMP owners.

Thanks
Travis

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

Thanks for the quick reply on the pics. You answered my question.
The DFR canister is 12" deep and 8" wide. The filter damn near takes up all that space inside the canister. Not saying that the UMP does not work but it looks to be the same size as the stock filter. That is one thing that sold me on the DFR is because of the fact that the filtered air has to filter through a much larger surface area than the stock filter.

That gets me thinking though. If his UMP works great with such a small donaldson filter then why can't a donaldson filter hook up to the stock air box and then remount the airbox on the tranny or engine to allow movement together?

Any thoughts?

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

Its all personal prefrence. You want the DFR, buy it. You want the UMP, get it. The filter in the UMP is much bigger than the stock, but its not always the size of the filter that counts. I saved almost 200 bucks on buying the UMP. I might get 100 miles less between cleanings due to the size difference in the UMP and DFR, but they have the same media, and they both work great! Also, I have an account with Grainger Equipment and they sell the exact replacement filter for the UMP cheap and their always here in stock locally.

Re: BTI vs FDR Air Intake

I checked out Off Road Warehouse, they have the UMP air box for 329.99, seems like a pretty good deal. I don't know if anyone can answer my next question yet, I've heard that the exhaust on the RZR S is routed a bit different, I wounder if either BTI or UMP system would have problems or experience interference from the exhaust? Probably not the UMP, it is a bit smaller?

I guess I'll know the answer her in about 2 weeks.
