If money is not a factor; xp all day. I had a 2015 900S, and now have a 2017 XP1000. I take my XP to all the spots I rode my S and I have absolutely no regrets.
The XP will ride better, but are there width restrictions anywhere close to you that would keep you from wanting a machine wider than 60"? If your area has no limit, then XP. If it is limited then the S.
No matter which you choose set aside money to upgrade the springs on the shocks. For the reason of costs Polaris specs cheap springs and puts them on great shocks.
I can attest to this; concerning oem springs. They sag extremely early and will kill your ground clearance and/or ride once you crank your pre load in attempt to regain ground clearance. I ran Racer Tech (RT Pro) springs on my 900 and now on my XP; they are expensive but worth it in my opinion.
