STI wheels on Tensor tires help

I've been frustrated with this wheel set up and wondering if anyone else has this issue. Since new because of the thick Tensor side walls I was told that it is normal to have a small gap between the wheel and the beadlock when I picked up the set. I have continuously broke the beadlock bolts and have even upgraded the stock bolts to a heavier quality one. (Same length) I have torqued to STI specs. The one thing I have not tried is anti-seize before installing the bolts but my issue is not them backing out but them breaking. This weekend on our 470 mile tour broke a couple bolts on one of my rims and popped the bead of course. I'm interested in hearing people with his same set up and if this is normal with the gap or not, what else can I do. Tires are great , no issues with our rough terrain we ride but I'm about to switch out my wheels if this is the case!! My buddies STI on Mongrels have no gap, so wondering if it's just the tires.

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

I've only had issues of my bolts backing out on the rears, never had broken bolts. My sand tires leave about the same gap between the rim and the rock ring. Have you tried a longer bolt?

I know STI changed their bolts to a longer thread a year or two ago. Possible you have the old bolt length?

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

Tensor tires are known to have a think bead which isn't always even. Method wheels have a spacer ring that goes between the rim and lock ring to eliminate that gap, thus eliminating your broken bolt issue. Youll never get a proper and constant torque on the bolts if the 2 materials being joined aren't touching. (Such as your rim and lock ring)

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

Thanks for posting this, we just ordered a set of Tensors this past weekend and was looking at the STI HD5 beadlocks. We may need to look at a different wheel if this is a common issue.

I like the wheels and priced well, but not happy with the gap space. If I can't find a resolution I will be buying new rims on the Tensor tires that I'm really happy with

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

I just ordered STI HD5 wheels and Tensor Regulator tires from SidebySide UTV Parts. They are suppose to be delivered mounted, hope I don't have issues with them.

Post pics of any space issues. Interested in hearing what the vendor has to say about it

OK Flag Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

I have the STI HD5's on 32" Pro Armor Crawler XG's. I heard about the bolts breaking so I torqued to 10 ft lbs instead of the 15 ft lbs and used a drop of locktite on the threads. Only one leaks just a tad and is leaking less and less.

They do have a small gap but you can't see it unless your looking for it. No broken bolts and no bolts backing out.

I don't think that adding the additional 5 ft lbs of torque would close the gap.

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

i just went thru this same issue..broke several bolts and was driving me nuts...that gap was too big with the tensor tires. I was mounting on the method 401's...30 inch tensors. I called method and they sent me some spacer rings that go in between and all my issues went away. Cost me 80$ for all 4 but problem solved. Tensors are really thick. Get the spacers and save yourself the headache

Yes I have heard Methods make a spacer for this application not sure if STI does or not. The manufacture does not have a number to call just a email for them to contact you, but I have tried twice and no one contacts you back!! Errrr

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

I spoke with SideBySide UTV Parts this morning about this issue, they told me that they haven't had anyone contact them with this concern. Two of the four tires and wheels were already mounted and they didn't see a problem with the two that were finished, the other two should be finished within the hour and shipped out today. I was told if there is a problem with the fitment that they could be returned.

This is the first time I've ever spend money on aftermarket wheels for any vehicle. Fingers crossed everything will be OK.

They were able to close the gap completely? Or they didn't see a problem with having a small gap?

Can't wait to see the new wheels Todd.

I do know that the 30" and above Tensors are extra thick. I have the 28" and all worked well with my stock Method Beadlocks and supplied bolts - except the one I snapped

Re: STI wheels on Tensor tires help

I ride in the southern Arizona area with a question. Since the Tensors have a thicker bead, do you actually need bead lock rims?
