Question Swivel Wheel 58DW trailer

Now that I have decided to buy the 50" RZR, I need to decide how to transport it. I have a Jeep Liberty and I have been thinking of pairing it up with a Swivel Wheel 58DW (5' long by 8' wide, double wheel). The ultimate single wheel trailer system. The website is not consistent in that it rates it at both 1100 and 1200 pounds of load in different locations. That will take the RZR's weight, but it does not allow much in the way of weight for modifications, fuel, and personal items. I am also worried about tie downs on the bed when the RZR is 50' wide and a wheelbase of 77". That takes up quite a bit of the surface area of the trailer. Should it be greater in size? Which really is not a trailer in the sense that it is not articulated, that is, you can back up without worrying about cocking your truck wheels in the opposite direction you want the trailer to go. You can just back up normally as if it were not there.

Has anyone in the forum ever had experience with a Swivel Wheel? Do you know anyone that has owned one? How sturdy are they? How well have they worked? Any information about successes or disappointments would be appreciated.

Re: Swivel Wheel 58DW trailer

Joseph -

Let me ask a dumb question: Why not just use a regular pull behind trailer?

Re: Swivel Wheel 58DW trailer

The set up that I have in mind is to Use the Jeep locally with the Swivel Wheel. But I also want to tow the Jeep behind our RV with the Swivel Wheel on the Jeep. I do not wish to tow a trailed car towing a conventionally hitched trailer. The Swivel Wheel avoids this kind of setup, just one towed vehicle that swings on a hitch.

Re: Swivel Wheel 58DW trailer

Let me see if I have this right. You want to use the swivel wheel attached to the Jeep and the Jeep attached to the motorhome?

The only problem I can see is that the Jeep with the swivel wheel could potentially really sway around alot - I mean to the point that it might not handle safely.

We have a similiar problem. We wanted to take our RZR behind our 5th wheel trailer. We found the Idaho Tote (Idaho Tote dolly, tow your atv, motorcycle, golf cart behind your rv.) to be our best solution. HOWEVER the Idaho Tote only works well with either a 5th wheel trailer or a tow trailer with a Hensley hitch. Something that will control the sway.

I think the swivel wheel trailer would work great if it were just behind the Jeep.

The Idaho Tote has the ability to lock the tote wheels to reduce sway. The swivel wheels are just going to follow the Jeep - if the Jeep sways a little the swivel wheel trailer is going to follow - pulling the Jeep. I suspect it will just sway around so much it would be unsafe.

Re: Swivel Wheel 58DW trailer

Run a similar tote behind my trailer for my son's quad. It works great. I do use a Hensley hitch to control sway. But have never had a problem. I believe there is a company that has a tote that connects to the back of a motorhome that you can tow a vehicle behind (Motorhome-Tote-Vehicle).

Laughing Re: Swivel Wheel 58DW trailer

Thanks, n7hwj. In my internet searches for this type of solution, I had never run across the Idaho Tote. It is very impressive and much more substantial than the Swivel Wheel. A lot more expensive too, about 3 times the cost of a SW. I guess it comes down to how safe and confident do you wish to feel about your RZR riding behind your rig.

I wanted to get a toy hauler motorhome, but the wife does not want fuel odors infiltrating from a garage into the RV.

It sounds like you and your wife had almost exactly the same conversation that my wife and I had. We want to take our toys but not necessarily live with them . Not saying anything against toy-haulers it's just not what we want. They do make haulers with a separate garage - which might work.

We're going to give the Tote a try and you're right they are not cheap - but I will have say the Tote is really well built.

Good luck,

Bill
