Michigan Road Legal RZR

Finally got the RZR inspected by local police, which questioned why I needed to be "road legal", so I informed him about trails that are signed "only SOS licensed vehicles beyond this point" signs. They also had questions about the "safety glass" windshield which was missing the safety glass logo on the glass. I then produced the receipt which states "automotive type safety glass", he signed off on the inspection and then it was off to the Sec of States office to apply for the assembled vehicle title. In Michigan they allowed the original serial numbers to be used so no special frame tag was needed. After paying the $15 title application fee, I also purchased a temporary 30 day license plate $30 and only have to wait for the title to be sent to me, then I'll be able to receive the permanent plates. Overall the process went smoothly. I would recommend if your in southeast Michigan, going to the Clinton Twp SOS office at Gratiot and Metro Parkway as they seemed to be the best informed about the titling of UTV's to road legal. Go see Mike or Jasmine at this office as they were very helpful in the process. The cost of the transition...$400 so safety glass windshield, $200 for turn signal, license plate light, and horn, $120 for parking brake, $60 for extra lights as the stock lights don't have HI/LO beam capabilities, but the biggest cost were the D.O.T. tires which only one manufacture "Super Swampper" makes them at $135 each and only in 14" rim size so I had to purchase rims too, at $95 each...not cheap any way you look at it, but the cost was worth to hassle that the DNR and forestry patrols dish out to non-licensed ORV's is what I'm after, and can't wait til they come across me all ready to write tickets until they see the license plates, the look on there face...priceless. Made me dirt bike road legal several years ago and had the same reaction from them...they were all huffy til they saw the plates, so they would just walk on by and write the next guy up that didn't have plates...PRICELESS

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

So the new title retains the factory VIN numbers? You did not have to have a new VIN sticker placed on vehicle? I knew of a guy that had to have a new VIN tag placed on the RZR by a SOS representative.

Mike,
Congrats on clearing all the hurdles
Where have you ever seen signage that required a street plate on an offroad trail?

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

Got insurance threw Progressive that gave me a package deal of the RZR, Honda GoldWing, and Honda Rincon 4x4. I asked if the insurance would cost more when I made the RZR road legal, they said it would cost the same. As far as the trails that have the signage "SOS licenced vehicles beyond this point" the roads that are dual purpose snowmobile/cars trails which I have been ticketed on before, now I'm good to go. Plus all the state and US forest roads (Huron National Forest)are off limits to ORV's, but if you have plates your good to go there too, which all the trails (Roscommon County) (Oscoda County) except the ORV trails leading into Luzerne or Mio are off-limits except plated vehicles, again was ticketed on forest roads last year, but never again. There are many, many instances that this would apply to that now I'm legal to ride on. Before they passed the PA240 law our group of riders were ticketed in one twenty minute period over $1600, then went some of the guys objected to the poor treatment by the DNR one of the officers drove off and waited down the road and wrote us all again more tickets, his answer was next time shut your mouth and take it. That year they wrote over $3800 in tickets to our group of riders, it was so bad that they told us just stay home and not ride the area, which was to stupidest thing they could have ever said, as the following year went the economy was tanking the areas were begging people to come and spend $$$, that is why the PA240 law was passed that allowed ORV to ride on the gravel roads and shoulders of paved roads to promote tourism and help local business survive the recession. Plus the county took over the law enforcement of the county roads and told the DNR to back-off. Through hard work the CCC and concerned businesses and individuals that this law was passed in Michigan.

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

Mike,

Please question Progressive more on your Insurance for the RZR this is the answer I got from them.

Finally got my TR-54 signed off by a Waterford Police Officer. Now the big problem called Progressive Insurance who on 6-17-2010 yes we can provide you with Insurance that works on-road and off-road. Then I called yesterday 7-27-2010 spoke with corporate Progressive and a agent in Flint, MI. Both came back saying because the RZR would be registered as a Assembled vechicle potentially with a M.I. VIN number they will not cover me on road. Now what do I do. The Michigan SOS is not consistent when registering the RZR sometimes you get to keep your VIN other times you do not. I have called State Farm and they are checking into it but this insurance could ruin the party. So if you have Progressive Insurance and you are street legal I would advise you to call Progressive and get clarification if you are covered on road.

Also EXF MotoGrip Tires are D.O.T approved only $98/each

I forgot about all the little 2-track forest roads being off limits to ORV's (somebody please explain why that is...). That does open up a bunch of state land to you. I'm sure you're going to be hassled anyways...

Also, there are a few more options for DOT tires...

the only street legal ATV tires are these ones:

UTV INC

Other than that, you could have went with any car or light truck tire for 14-15" wheels...but none are as aggressive as the Super Swampers that you mentioned.

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

The SOS policy is if the serial number is 17 digits that you will keep the Polaris serial number when you get it titled road legal. This then meets progressives insurance requirement of on-road coverage. I did check with them before and after the titling process.

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

Did you have proof of insurance to get the new title? If so did you show the progressive insurance?

Yes I did have insurance when I applied for the title, and yes I showed the Progressive Insurance certificate to the SOS, which they accepted.

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

Progressive will insure an "assembled vehicle". I have a dune buggy with a titled labeled "assembled vehicle" and they have insured it for the last 4 years. 200 bucks a year (PLPD).

Re: Michigan Road Legal RZR

I have been an insurance agent here in Michigan for 18 plus years. I own a Rhino 660 and a RZR S Weber Turbo. Progressive does NOT offer Michigan No-Fault to street legal SxS. There has been some communication issues regarding this with Progressive. However, if your certificate does not state "Michigan No-Fault", you are not driving legally here in michigan. The fines start at $275 for the first offense. But even worse, if you are involved in any injury causing accidents to others, you will be in serious financial trouble. Bankruptcies exclude Bodily Injuries caused to others. If you hurt yourself, many Michigan health providers exclude PIP(auto medical) coverages, inlcuding ALL union BCBS plans. I too, would like to make mine street legal. But, I am not about to spend $1,000-1,600 in doing so and not doing it legally and with out insurance protection.

First legitimate, verifyable, personally insured "Michigan No-Fault" certificate for a side by side atv emailed to me, gets $100.00 from me.
