tilt wheel steering problem

the steering wheel will no longer lock into a given position,it just extracts itself all the way up no matter what you do with the tilt lever.Any clues bout this would be appreciated.Surely that little oil locking shock isnt bad...it is never used.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

mine did the same thing, extended warranty said it does not replace shocks, it cost me about $ 110.00 for the new one.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

This has been conered a few times, it's a easy repair. Remove the shock and chuck it in your vise @ the bottom bolt hole. Loosen the bolt @ the top and remove the lever. Now look in the center of the shaft and you wll see a rod. Soak this with WD-40 or a syclone spray and let it stand for an hour or so. Now grab the top of the rod with a pair of vice-grips and rotate it. If the rod is flush and you can't grab it, use a small punch and tap it to get it to extend. Once it rotates freely, reassemble and test, it should work.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

Where could a guy get some kind of boot to slide over the entire shock to keep water and dust out of it? I know it wouldn't keep water out if it's submerged but....

Just an idea.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

Grease will, pack the end around the lever openings with marine grease, that will repel the water. KC.

This is what I did this weekend. The rod was inside, so I had to tap on side of the shock until the rod popped out. I WD'd it more and worked the rod in and out.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

I took mine apart tonight, wish I hadn't touched it! It was staying right where I wanted it lately but I had troubles with it in the past. When I took it apart the little pin in the center was stuck so I sprayed it with WD-40 then it would turn and go in & out but it has no pressure against it. It will stay where you leave it, in or out, or wherever. Now the steering wheel is at the top position for good until I get it working right. Is there a broken spring inside now or what? The website of the shock manufacturer isn't much help at all.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

Thanks alot for your info on the tilt steering fix, it worked for me. Just took a bit of fine tuning to get the adjustment right on the valve. Thanks again....saved me $100+. Let me know if you are ever in s. Idaho and I'll buy you a cool one.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

Mine stopped working while it was at the dealer for other repairs. They covered it under warrenty and told me that there was an updated part because it was a common problem.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

I think there should be a recall on this from the number of failures. Replaced mine through cheapcycleparts.com about $62. The replacement is much better quality with really good spring.

Re: tilt wheel steering problem

Mine does this occasonially if I let it sit too long. Just pull the steering wheel down all the way & jiggle the leaver. Works every time. (Works for the driver too)
