Road Legal - Which States?

Hi, I thought it might be an idea to draw up a list of states where it's legal to ride your RZR on the road, especially as a while back there was a thread about crossing the US by RZR.

So if you've managed to register your RZR for the road, or know you can, then post up which state you're in, and I'll compile a list and maybe make a map up.

PS, I discovered an odd anomally in US law. while the individual states decide who can and can't register their vehicle for the road, if I arrive in the US with a French road-legal and licenced RZR it appears I can drive it legally in every state, as long as I leave within a year. Weird hey?

street legal in Arizona. All you need is a horn, a rear veiw mirror, lights, a lighted liscence plate bracket and proof of insurance

I have my plated in MI, Although I am very nervous because every cop that sees it on the road HAS to pull you over....Not a very relaxing ride.

Re: Road Legal - Which States?

Wyoming it is easy. Over and above the stock equipment on a RZR, just an electric horn and a rear view mirror on the left side are required.

There are some restrictions though. They cannot be driven on the Interstate Highways and when they are on a highway with a speed limit that exceeds the capability of the RZR, the RZR must be ridden on the extreme right (since you are a Brit I am talking about the "correct side") side of the road.

Would it not be cheaper to just buy a RZR when you got here and sell it when you left rather than shipping one? Then the steering wheel would be on the correct side too.

I think the obscure law is actually written into our Constitution. It is called the "Official Acts Clause" where states are required to honor the official acts of the other states. Also, Treaties essentially become an extension of the Constitution. So you could buy a RZR in Wyoming (or France) and get it registered and ride it in other states.

But I'm not sure it would work. Because while a particular State could not issue you a ticket for for not having license plates, they could probably issue you a ticket for being on their roads lacking the proper equipment like perhaps a lighted license plate. I'm not sure it would work that way but I think you would be getting into a gray area where an officer could mess with you.

Re: Road Legal - Which States?

Ah, but I'm a Brit who lives in France so the steering wheel's on the correct side for the US (in fact I think in the UK the steering wheel ends up on the "wrong side" it's not switched over), and of course a road-legal RZR in France has a French licence plate - lit, mirrors, horn, dim-dip lighting, pretty much a car really.

And why would I ship it over? Well we're wondering about continuing east from China and of course the next place east is the US of A. so it's good to know where you can ride on the street, so we can join up the trails.
