Re: Rzr hard to shift!!!

Mine was hard to shift also. I know that I was pretty ruff with it one day and then it was easy. I changed the transmission fluid the other day and guess what came out when I removed the drain plug? The steel ball! I am sure this has been bouncing around for some time inside the transmission. I went ahead and removed the spring..........

Just for kicks, try disconnecting the cable from the trans. It is just a little spring clip. It will take about 30 seconds. Then try your shifter. You will probably find it is still hard to shift. My money is on the cable being dirty and rusty. It cant hurt to try.
I agree 100%, this will tell if the problem is cable related or past the linkage! But while you have the cable off grab the shift lever mounted to the side of the trans. case and manually shift thru the full range of the transmission and observe the dash indicator for gear selection. Normally it is a very easy and smooth transition from one position to the next!

Re: Rzr hard to shift!!!

(sorry for bring up a older post but it sounded alot like my issue.)

OK so I'm have a hard to shift problem on my 08. Just checked and mine still had the upper detent ball and spring so I took them out, not much changed. So I was going to ask for some pointers on what to look for next.

The best way for me to tell you what I'm feeling and seeing is.... Mine will shift/change gears easy with the motor off. When I have the motor running and sitting still and try to change from say low to reverse it doesn't want to come out of low. Just the same say I'm in R and and want to goto H. Also when slowing down almost to a stop it feels like the bike wants to walk, even with your foot on the brake.

So is this something in the clutch? BTW, it has a new belt on it also. Any input or advise would be great here. Thanks in advance.

Re: Rzr hard to shift!!!

Ghost welcome to the site!
Did the problem get worse after installing the new belt? Sounds like the spring or springs in the clutch might be weak and not releasing the belt all the way. High rpms would cause the same thing. A new (and slightly wider) belt would be more likely to hang on the sheaves that are not opening far enough.

Re: Rzr hard to shift!!!

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm not sure if it helped or not pre-owner just put the new belt on about a month ago. I think it had been doing the same with the old belt and that was the reason he tried the new belt. I'm thinking it has to be something clutch wise, I'm just new to the RZR stuff and wanted some input on where I need to put my time/money in order to fix the issue.

Re: Rzr hard to shift!!!

I don't know what year your RZR is but my 09 "S" had a one way bearing on the clutch and was starting to freeze up not allowing the belt to slip at idle. Replaced it with a 2 way bearing that goes on an 08 and all was good.

Hehe I know this problem well....

I had the problem on my 08 and it just happened last month on my 09S - its the bearing in your primary clutch $20 part in 08 (2 way bearing) $100 part for a one way bearing in the 09. You can use the 08 bearing in the 09, I went with the one way to keep it like the factory.

You will need a clutch puller and about 1 hour to change it out with the right tools.

I would bet $$ this is your problem, do not take too long to replace or the bearing will eat up your Primary clutch ($500 part) yes I know from experience, no the Polaris extended warranty did not cover it.
