Recreation Utility Vehicles (RUV's) New Polaris RZR Classification

Discovered this today while researching a RZR purchase. Do any of you know anything about this?

Only two and four wheel vehicles not exceeding 54 inches in width allowed. NO THREE WHEEL VEHICLES or RUV's ALLOWED. Crosstimbers trails have been designated for ORV's. The new law in OK defines RZRs, Rhinos, Teryxs, etc., as Recreation Utility Vehicles (RUV's) and not ORV's. This is a recent change. Permits can no longer be sold to RUV riders, but anyone already having a permit for 2008 will be permitted (grandfathered) to ride their RUV on the ORV trails for the remainder of the permit season. The main reason for the change is that RUVs are becoming dangerously powerful with hop-up kits to get them over 100hp. They really are in a class of their own.

Great, just what we need more government involvement in areas where theyre not needed or wanted.

I'm guessing that news is "old news" considering it states; "anyone already having a permit for 2008...."

Re: Recreation Utility Vehicles (RUV's) New Polaris RZR Classification

I have been riding 4 wheelers in the Kisatchie National Forest, Kisatchie Ranger District in Louisiana for several years and usually camp out and make a weekend of our ride. They always close the trails from Jan 1 - May 1 and enforce the 50" rule there also. I have gotten to know some of the Rangers as they usually stop by and talk with the campers, anyway, I was at the local Toyota dealership earlier this month for service and while I was waiting one of the Rangers came in so I struck up a conversation with him to pass time. I told him I had purchased a RZR and would be bringing it with us this year when they reopened. He told me they were considering banning side x sides such as the RZR even though they met the 50" rule because their power and weight were doing excess damage to the trails. He said a final decision will be made before they reopen in May. There are a few other Kisatchie National Forest areas in Louisiana further south and those areas stay open all year so there rules must change by district so I don't know if this will affect them or not. This sucks!!

At this point it is disappointing to see but I donít have all the details nor have I been able to find any official documents. I have no proof of its origin, nothing showing me that it is this particular park or state wide. If you should run across any information on this please let me know. I will do the same.

Now on another note I am happy to see another RZR owner/operator in Oklahoma. Iíve started reading about your part of the state and itís wonderful riding areas.

Someone's gotta pay back China...

I was unaware of this. But I have not renewed my registration since.... umm nevermind

On a car/pickup no problem, EVERYONE should pay that.

Just tax money scam BS. IMO if Oklahoma has no vehicle inspection (you should see the junk on the highways here), no tags on trailers... the WTF is the reason to have a permit on your buggy? NONE of that money goes to supporting riding areas!!! I guess the 30+% from our paychecks every year isn't enough.

Re: Recreation Utility Vehicles (RUV's) New Polaris RZR Classification

Last year I ran into a similar situation with an offroad park that no longer allowed "buggies" on their trails due to their power & ability to tear things up. The rule applied to any 4-wheeled OHV smaller than a Jeep. This didn't sound like the "buggies" I knew so I called and talked to the owner. Seems they had some trouble with big-cc sand rails going crazy fast, tearing up trails and scaring the crap out of other riders so they simply banned anything smaller than a Jeep that had 4 wheels.
We talked about UTV's and mini-buggies and how they really aren't even capable of causing this kind of trouble he agreed to change the rules to be more specific. The original rule was created out of ignorance & was a knee-jerk reaction to a specific problem.

Call the rangers, park management, district office or whatever & educate them that UTV's with low pressure tires can't cause this damage & actually do way less harm than a dirtbike or sport ATV which often seem incapable of driving in a straight line without fishtailing & throwing roosts everywhere.
