I went to lowes today to try to find something to use as home mode lock and ride clamps. I could not find anything there. What is everyone using to lock stuff into the lock and ride holes?
That particular rubber expanding plug isn't at most hardware stores. The ACE I go to all the time has them but they only get 3 or 4 every couple months. Some vendor comes in & fills the little box they are in and I go back & buy em out!
Others may work but this type fits perfect and grabs like it's glued in. 1/2 turn on the eyebolt and I can't pull it out.
If you look at how the Polaris Lock-n-ride works it actually expands the rubber part slightly below the lower edge of the hole.
This means it is secure from pulling out of the hole and does not rely on friction alone.
Most of the home-made units, and the boat plugs rely on friction alone.
They may feel very snug but if you put much tension on it and ride down a washboard road they will pop out like cork.
The inside of the hole is too smooth, giving nothing for the plug to hold against.
If you get a 1" x 3/8 thick spacer and add it to the rubber cork so that the rubber extends about 1/4" below the hole it will expand just enough to be very secure.
There is a problem with the hole itself. If you expand these plugs too much they can split down near the lower opening.
This can be cured by putting a stainless steel hose clamp around the bottom of the opening BEFORE inserting the plug.
I just made a bunch of the homemade ones, but I didn't have a Polaris one to look at. Maybe I should just buy the tusk ones and modify them? They are only $2 more than buying the freeze plugs at autozone or orielly... I might just use them between two washers instead, at least the plug fills the hole a litter better than just 2 washers clamped down would I suppose.
What XXX says makes sense. I don't know how far to trust these home-made anchors. I've never had one pull out but for transporting fuel it might be wise to add the spacer he suggests, or just a big washer on the bottom to make it semi-permanent.
Looking in McMaster Carr, 30075T35
Looks like the answer.
These are for 1.25 to 1.375 inches. Other sizes avaible.

Going to buy some, wonder if anyone else has already tried them?
