Want to paint my RZR

Anybody know what kind of paint people are using to paint their RZR's plastic? I want mine different and I don't want to pay $2200 for it. The dealer where I bought mine had a black satin RZR that was badass. The dealer also told me that the paint is more durable than the plastic. Anybody got opinions on this?

Fusion would work but I would rather not spray bomb it. I've got painting equipment and would like to do it right. If you use an actual spray gun and mixed paint the results are much better.

Re: Want to paint my RZR

I worked in body and paint shops for 26 years. We always fought trying to keep paint on plastic parts, it just doesn't adhere well. I wouldn't paint mine for that reason. Just my opinion of course. Have you thought about adding graphics?

Re: Want to paint my RZR

The paint does not want to stick to the green and red plastics. We were able to do it by using 800 scotch brite pads, wax and grease remover, then applied bulldog adhesive promoter, then base coat, candies and clear coat from House of Kolor. It work but a real pain in the arse... My buddy put it on its side 3rd trip out and about 40 hrs went down the tube plus $300+ in supplies. I now have the black paintable plastics (Polaris is selling for $550 for the set) which I was just going to run black but they scuff way too easy so... we will be painting them. No base coat just bulldog, candies, then cear coat. Actually I would just bulldog and clear coat them but the guy whos doing it wants to practice flames so he won't do it that way. I'm not paying him so he kinda gets to choose I suppose.

Re: Want to paint my RZR

I own a bodyshop and can tell you that the red and green plastics can be painted but it needs to be done by a bodyshop. Painting them is very similar to painting a raw OEM plastic bumper for any new import car. Our paint material supplier has a plastic prep that gets rid of the mold injection residue that wont allow paint to stick to it.

Which is called? Are you speaking of SEM plastic prep? If so I guess that might be better than using wax and grease remover or just after.

Re: Want to paint my RZR

I figured there is an adhesion promoter you could use just wasn't sure what it was. The dealer says their paint is holding up great. I know these guys a little and tend to believe them. I went to school for paint and body and have painted a few cars so I'm not scared to do it. I might go with some graphics but would rather paint it just because I wanted a blue one. And knowing Polaris they won't have blue for another couple years. Good point with the graphics if I roll mine I will be most unimpressed with paint. I saw another thread with the Camoblast and liked the idea but no camo for me. What is the name of the cleaner or adhesion promoter?

Thanks for the replies

Re: Want to paint my RZR

What is the name of the cleaner or adhesion promoter?

SEM wax and degreaser. Scrub it down then just rince with water. Adhesive promoter I use is Bulldog. HOK paint also has an adhesive promoter but the Bulldog seems to work. Ohh and if your painting over the Red or Green you'll want a 2 part epoxy primer. HOK (House of Kolor) sells a good one for plastics.

Primers and Sealers
We used: CHROMATE-FREE EPOXY PRIMER SURFACER (KP2CFA & KP2CFB)

BTW. I'm no expert but were have been figuring this shiate out as we go... lol

Re: Want to paint my RZR

If you are set on painting your plastic, take my advice and buy the (Flex Additive) for your specific paint. When I was painting cars, we had to ad the flex additive to the paint seperately for the flexable plastic bumpers and filler panels. If you don't ad this additive, it will crack when it flexes, more so after it is cured hard (2 Weeks)

DuPont™ Plas-StickŪ 2350S™ Flexible Additive
Description
Plas-StickŪ 2350S™ Flexible Additive is designed for use in selected ChromaSystem™ undercoat, single stage and
clearcoat products. Plas-StickŪ 2350S™ is part of a system of products designed to improve the adhesion, chip resistance
and flexibility of ChromaSystem™ products over semi-flexible and fully-flexible plastics.
