I got back from a ride today while pulling into garage i noticed a popping sound from the left front wheel, if stopped if you grab the wheel and rock the wheel right to left it pops also, any suggestions on what this could be, could the axle nut just be backed off even though the cotter pin is still there

Re: Popping noise at front left wheel
It could be several things. Do a search on popping or clicking front end and you will find several things to check.
My 2008 RZR had it and it was a bearing. Others have just had to tighten the castle nut or get different cone washers or washers to space out the cone washers. It could also be a CV joint, but start with the easy fixes first. I recently found my brakes were rattling in the rear, also a common source of noise. I don't know if the front brakes also have this problem. Hope that helps!

Re: Popping noise at front left wheel
Here’s a new one for you….
I’ve had a very rare popping sensation in my front left wheel for a long time, had checked everything I’ve ever seen mentioned! Over this past weekend while disconnecting front sway bar noticed some movement in the left upper ball joint. Reviewing what was involved to replace, got to looking and decided to recheck the pinch bolt torque……yep, it had 17 ft. lbs so I gave it 20! Well the loose play went away… …..after I’d check the other three, I continued messing with sway bars and wheel spacers. Only to return to the left front wheel to find the slight slop was back, ![]() When I remove the pinch bolt and popped the A-arm and ball joint out of the carrier bearing I found the problem was a slight worn spot on the top section of the concaved area that the pinch bolt passes thru! This end of the ball joint rotates when you turn, suddenly realizing that I seemed to only hear the popping noise when I’m turning and the left suspension is unloaded …….there it was! I’m talking a very small amount of wear but enough to create the POP when turning and that spot rotates into position and upper A-arm drops 2/100th of inch! Only working camera in the house at the time was my daughter’s cell phone and I’ve not had her download the pics yet. Yep, do a search and you’ll find plenty of things to check the easy would be to just need to re-torque the castle nut unless your in need of the extra washer……..just maybe the coned washers are on wrong and all you need to do is turn them around! Then again if the bearing is bad maybe you'll catch the cause during the repair......enjoy your search, I hope mind is over! |
