how is a Stock RZR-S 800 in the sand?

hey so i just picked up my rzr today ( and LOVE IT ) but our annual st anthony trip is coming up in may and i usually take my raptor but now with this SxS i dont even wanna look at the quad lol. so i wanna know if anyone has been to st anthony dunes with a stock 800 and how did it perform? or any dunes with a stock rzr. im not expecting to climb the steepest hills but my quad is all done up and itll make any hill you throw at it so im on the fence with it. Will i be struggling to keep up with the rzr? any input will help me make the best choice. and if a stock rzr does have trouble then whats a quick mod to maybe help it out?

thanks guys

You'll do just fine...maybe drop your air pressure to around 5 psi with the stk Bighorns, but paddles really make a difference..and you might kick yourself for not getting an XP once you get on the sand

Our stock 800s has no trouble in the sand.....would definitely get paddles when you get a chance, but not imperative.

I use and recommend Retirement!

My stock 800 does fine with the tires lowered to under 5 psi and leaving it in awd. You won't be climbing choke cherry though...

I just heard somewhere that the stock rzr has troubles turning paddle tires, would 4 paddle tires on a rzr be worth it? Or just 2 of the rear and leave it in 2wd

4 paddles tires would be overkill and could actually slow you down. I also don't recommend staying in 4wd the whole time. 4wd is good and sometimes necessary to climb steep dunes, however it also can give you too much traction. 4wd could cause your rzr to tip when the front tires grab while side hilling or trying to slide the rear end out. I learned this the hard way ...Almost every accident I have seen in the sand involving a rollover the rzr was in 4wd. I recommend a good quality paddle like Skat Trak's and keep your speed up...the key to the sand is speed and momentum.

Hmmm......I've found that on a side hill when the front end is washing out I can goose it and the front wheel drive will pull the front end back up the hill.

Ya that technique side hilling works great most of the time...the problems arise when you are on a steep incline with really soft sand....I drove my rzr in 4wd most of the time until I was side hilling a steep razor back and the rear end washed out...I gassed it, front tires grabbed, and over I went....I also don't want to put all that strain on the 4wd for 4-5 days at the dunes...one buddy in our camp always drove in 4wd and here he is!

Re: how is a Stock RZR-S 800 in the sand?

this is me at st anthony's. 26" sand star 10 paddles and the sand star smoothies up front.
i run them low and wfo. the only thing i can't go up is chock cherry.

It's not how you look standing next to your rzr,it's how you drive it. WFO is the only way to go! See ya at the dunes.
Rzr's rule and all others drooll !!!!

I bought the Doonz 25.5x13-12 paddles on 12x10 with a 5+5 offset Douglas red label for the rear and 25.5x11-12 Doonz Rib with 12x8 with a 5+3 offset red label in front...worked great on my 11 s package with lugs mounted was $ 875 from Florence Polaris

Yea I definitely wanna get a clutch kit but I've noticed they are for a specific type of riding, we only hit the dunes once a year and around my area is trails and mud. I'm looking to build it more all around instead of a straight duner or mudder
