I see them when ever I go out there. And they seem to have to tow them back quite often. But then you figure alot of the peaple renting them know nothing about off roading. Nice peaple that run it though. And they keep a close eye on the rookies. And are a lot safer then alot of the peaple that ride there.

I live on the east side (sunrise mountain area) we are lucky to have such a good rideing area so close. We have run the back side of the mountain and near the Wetlands park area too. Not to sure BLM wants us there, but there are roads and no postings to stay out.

Re: Nice newspaper acticle on Nellis Dunes

Hey rockytopman, The only area left in the valley to ride is Nellis. The BLM has closed of the valley to riding from Lee Canyon to the NW, Apex to the NE, Sloan RD. at I-15 and at about El Dorado Valley to the SE. I spoke to a rep at BLM last week regarding the trails thy closed at Mt. Charleston area. I told him that there are a lot of trails there that are not marked closed or no OHV. He stated that you will get a ticket if you are not on a designated route. It is the responsibility of the rider to know where they are ad what roads and trails are legal. That is how they get away with in in court. If you go to the BLM ofice they will give you a map. I will try to post them here in a day or so. I ride at Nelson a lot as well as Mt Charleston. I live in the NW so Charleston is close and the roads and trails are mostly US Forest Service. We took Lucky Strike a few weeks ago with "Middleagedcrazy" and a few others from the Local RZR Club. Any questions let me know.

Re: Nice newspaper acticle on Nellis Dunes

It is time for BLM to put all maps on the web. The NFS is do it. Plus get easy to buy on the web then drive all the way on other side of town get it. This is where the off road groups is failing. The three toe frog shut down north side of Glamis. lol

Here the link for hiking trails for Sloan.

Re: Nice newspaper acticle on Nellis Dunes

When I met with BLM I asked them about closing the trails. They told me that they posted a notice in the local paper. No body here in Vegas reads the local paper. They calim they had a hearing and no one objected to closing the trails so they just closed them all off. I was up at Mt Charleston this past weekend and saw a bucnch of dirt bikers take off on roads that are closed. Some marked and some not. I don't think they even knew what was legal and was was not. When I bought my Quad I asked the local shops for maps of the areas I could ride. They new of none. That is why I have been using Google Earth and mapping all the trails that you can ride close to Vegas. I hope to be done soon.

Do to law suit at Lake Mead, all gov land need to have a land action plan. Don't have a lot money in to toys and already be able to change your hobby fast.

Mt Charleston is NFS. There is a way to way tell if you BLM or NFS road by the color of the sign posts.

Good stuff on the replies! Can't wait for the maps. I talked to the ranger station on Lake Mead Drive and they said keep in the washes around goverment wash area and no one will care. Those areas get flooded out & cleared of tracks once in a while. I would like to get that in writing before going there. They were really nice about it. If no one scars the hillsides it should be ok...keep the information flowing! Hey, call Harry Reids office about this. He is a big BLM info guy & wants re-election...if enough locals bug him he may be able to help on ride areas!!!

Re: Nice newspaper acticle on Nellis Dunes

You said it. "If no one scars the hillsides it should be ok" It only one to screw it up.

Don't call but protest drive by the BLM land with horn's/sign. BLM is a small street North east side of town. When they try to close Glamis mine family drove around in early 70' Riverside,Ca protesting the closing. You call Reed and tell the news. By doing this it show the tree hungers that offroad people are not sleeping.

I don't like the threat of being ticket and having to buy maps every year.

There is gem mine out there just outside of the park.

Re: Nice newspaper acticle on Nellis Dunes

Yes Mr.T part of Charleston is NFS but not all. A large part of it is Wilderness Area, and no motor-vehicles or evan mountain bikes are allowed in there. Here is a Google Map of the area. I mapped the BLM Designated Routes in Blue and the NFS in Green. To the bottom (south) of Kyle Cyn is Harris Springs Rd. You can drive a 2WD truck SUV on that Road. It joins the NPS section up to 6,000 feet in elevation. The road north of Kyle Cyn is Lucky Strike Rd. It goes to the Power Line road that meets the 95 Freeway. When you enter the NFS area there are signs telling you that you are in the NFS area. They just added the signs for the BLM area in the pass few weeks. Now as for Lake Mead National Recreation Area (LMNRA) if you are caught with "un-licensed" off road vehicles you will get a ticket. You can drive a truck, jeep even a licensed registered motorcycle in the area. However, ATV's and side by sides are not allowed. I had three friends of mine get caught in the area and the ranger held two of the ATV's and made the third go back and get the truck and come pick the others up, with a nice big $400 ticket each. If you speed in the LMNRA you will get a $400 ticket. I got one and fought it, got it reduced to $300. Now I set my cruse control to 50 mph in the area. Now these are just some of the NFS roads. I have not put all of them in yet. I have the GE file if anyone wants it. They can see the trails and upload them to a GPS unit to follow. I convert the track from a KML to USR for my Lowrance and upload it as a route, than go follow it. I will post the map I got from BLM here soon, I have to scan it.
