Just shoot me in the Head!!!

When I took off my clutch exhaust snorkel tube for maintenance, little pieces of a vespal washer came out. I used the you tube homemade clutch removal method (4" 3/4 fine thread bolt & 1/2" x 4" bolt) to remove and repair as to protect my clutch and drove the 1/2" by 4" bolt right into the end of my crank shaft about 3/4 to one inch!! After drilling almost all of that out, I tried to just start a smaller tap in what was left of the bolt hoping to basically grab what was left and remove the debis and that broke inside. It is loose, wiggles, and turns but will not come out. I still have an outside chance of a remedy without a new crankshaft in a perfect motor but maybe not. Anyone trying this should use a 5/8 by 4" bolt NOT A 1/2 x 4"!!

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

Well I was VERY lucky!!!! When I finally got the remaining piece of that bolt out, I found that the Threads for the clutch bolt were further in the shaft and UNHARMED. The hair is already grayer and the heart damage done but I am good to go. Instead of an unnecessary motor tear down, all I had was time, one broken drill bit, tap, and purchased mini needlenose plyers. I not only dodged a bullet, it was a 50 cal. bullet.

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

OR...you could have went to your local shop and bought a clutch puller for $50 and had the right tool for the job, WITHOUT chancing you damaging a very expensive crank. And you would have the tool for future jobs as well as a loner tool for friends doing the same thing. Sometimes being cheap ISNT worth it.

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

Hey Jay Thanks for your hindsight, if my head were as far up my ass as yours, I would not have known that a puller like that is not at a local store, especially on the weekend, AND this was the first tip from utube that did not save me allot of time and money. Never been cheap in my life, just made a mistake that I do not mind admiting in an effort to help prevent another rider from diaster. What is the point in your remark ass***!!

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

if my head was up my ass, i wouldnt be able to read or type. LOL

The whole point was to let people know to not get in a rush and hodge podge bolts together to try and make a puller that costs $50. Instead of risking a thousand plus to replace your crank, wait a couple days to get the right tool for the job.

Its the exact same message your sending out except for one thing. Im telling them the RIGHT way to do the job. Your telling them to continue to try the WRONG way to do things using the right size bolts.

See the difference? So next time you wanna call me names, make sure your not in the wrong.

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

I've got another suggested item NOT to use - 3/8ths drive extension, turned with the small end towards the motor!
Tried that one when I was tearing down the motor last month, wedged it in the end of the crank very nicely.
In my case, I was tearing it down to replace the crank anyways, so I didn't bother trying to get it out - all I lost was a cheap 3" extension.
Sure would be pissed if I did that to a good crank though!

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

Jay you do not read or type worth a sh** and as I said, that was the ONLY tip that did not pan out so it could happen to anybody trying to get a job done and no reason to think that a method which worked for others would not work fine. That is why I put it out there. AGAIN, hindsight! No one on this forum needs told you so's, it is a place to talk and share information. I think most realize the options without your condesending wisdom. There are always more than one way to do something RIGHT, your not helping anyone, your just mouthing off!!

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

Hey ridefst, I am glad you were replacing anyway so your project did not go south. I still made a clutch holder and spyder wrench with stuff lying around so keep using your noggen, just be careful. I went ahead and bought the spyder wrench so I could use my torque wrench for assembley but got everything apart, cleaned, and repaired while waiting. Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

You took my comment completely the wrong way. It wasnt meant to be offensive. If you want an apology, I apologize. Sometimes text can be taken the wrong way very quickly. It did in this case. Re-read it a few times. I did not directly call you cheap, I said that the way you described doing the job was cheap. I also informed people that there is a better and safer way to do the job the way it is supposed to be done. And if you are going to own RZRs, having that specific tool is a good option for future jobs and for friends to borrow.

I see you continue to try and bash me by being a typing/grammar nazi. Where in any of my replies was my typing or reading any worse than yours? You keep trying to show how big your "e-peen" is, yet you continue to show how ignorant you really are.

As for me mouthing off, again, it wasn't meant that way. That's how you took it. But I can see how it could be taken that way. The biggest problem I had with this post is that you try to let others know a good thing, in the right size bolts to use, but you don't inform them of the way it should be done. Your trying to help, but your still telling them to try something that puts them at risk for spending a lot of extra money.

So whatever man. It is what it is. Keep trying to make yourself look better than me. I'm done with this thread, as I'm sure future readers will be too.

Good luck in the future.

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

But to give Jay a boost. You can buy the tool on eBay or from several vendors...I read the forum while I was waiting for my 2009 to show up at the dealer. I read about the tool and that its necessary. So I bought one and carry it with me. I've also made copies of posts/service manual, vendor info...put them in a Ziploc bag with the tool and that way I have the tool and a reminder on how to use it with me...anywhere!!

Good info Jay, sorry you got slammed for trying to provide good info. I agree with you completely!!

Re: Just shoot me in the Head!!!

I'm glad we have have a tool sheriff on the site to call us out. I put new springs on with ratchet strips instead of buying some spring compressors. I guess I'm a cheap ass.
