Coolant Loss

Just wondering if anyone else has this issue: I'm loosing a small amount of coolant about every tankful of fuel, and wondering if it's "normal" or anyone else has this issue? The RZR is an '09 Limited 50-inch, no engine mods. We're the second owner and it's done it since we got it. Here's the scenario: radiator is full so fill the plastic overflow bottle to between the "min" and "max" lines. Take a ride, about 15-20 minutes out running around 35-40 mph on decent gravel roads, there's an odor of coolant. The fan kicks on occcasionally and runs briefly, there's no indication it's overheated. Check all the lines, radiator, etc, etc and unable to locate a leak, no coolant in the oil either. After about 200 miles the overflow bottle is empty, and she doesn't loose any more coolant or produce the odor. So what's up??

Re: Coolant Loss

I would say you have leak. If you cannot hunt it down your self, you may have to go the Fluorescent Dye Leak way of finding it. Find a local Radiator Shop and they should be able to find it, put in some Dye and you go run it, take it back, they Blacklight it and find the leak, or you can buy a good Blacklight Bulb and do it yourself.
And it sounds like you have leak from inbetween the Overflow Tank and the Motor, probablly down along the bottom.

Re: Coolant Loss

Mine does the same thing, and I know of a few more rzrs do the same thing. I just leave my overflow bottle empty and Ive never had a problem. Im thinking that the coolant smell and loss of coolant is its coming out of the overflow tube off your radiator. Never had an overheating problem with the coolant only in the radiator.

Same here, never had an issue, just kind of bugs me. I've wondered if it's escaping from that tiny little vent hole in the bottle cap, but I can never find a trace of coolant anywhere. Oh well, at least it not's leaking from my Jaeger flask.

Re: Coolant Loss

My 2010 RZR4 can smell antifreeze most of the time. No overheating.

Re: Coolant Loss

Mine was doing the same thing pulled skid plates and the rubber hose connections from the steel tubes underneath were not tight also had some antifreeze on the connections never saw a drip under the rzr but there was some on the top side of the skids

This sounds like the most probable cause; if it's slowly leaking onto the skid-plate/s, it would be awfully hard to spot from the outside, IMO.........

Cheers

Re: Coolant Loss

Check the weep hole on the water pump..just a few drops to stream down out of it and you can smell it pretty good...and when engine is warmed up it evaporates fast..A "ghost" leak.

Re: Coolant Loss

My weep hole is sealed up, yes do check the clamps underneath the rzr where it goes from hardline to hose. Mine were good to go. The pinhole on my overflow bottle has a cotton ball in the cap to prevent gritty water from getting in when Im dash deep in water

Re: Coolant Loss

Hmmm, weep hole. I truly hadn't thought of that. Where is it located?

Re: Coolant Loss

None of our Rzrs lose Antifreeze. You have a leak somewhere. Pull the skids, weephole. Find the leak.
