Oil consumption question

I currently have 550 miles on my 2009 RZR. I think it's something like 17 hours. I did my first oil change at 15 hours and also changed the air filter. At that time I checked to see if I had any dust intrusion issues, and I did slightly. I have since put a UMP filter on it.
We just put 150 miles on this past weekend and I noticed it used some oil. Not a lot but some. When I did the change I put 2 quarts in , which ends up reading slightly past the "safe" dot. We after the 150 miles it dropped to the "safe" dot. I know this isn't a lot of oil but my believe has always been that a fresh/new motor does not use oil , oil usage is a sign of wear.
I've had a 700hp 540ci BBC in a boat that didn't use a drop , and that has been held WFO for 10-15 miles at a time. My Cummins diesel doesn't use any in my 8000-10000 miles in between oil changes. My VW TDI doesn't use any.
So is this normal or a sign that I should take it in to the dealer and see whats up ?

Re: Oil consumption question

I would keep an eye on it and make sure you don't let it go below the safe range. Adding 20% Lucas oil should help. (It can't hurt)
Mine was using a half of quart of oil per tank of fuel before I took it in. Polaris is replacing the top end due to dust intake. The best way to ensure your motor is not damaged is to do a compression test and leakdown test. It should be between 150-200 for compression and less than 15% for the leakdown. (Your dealer can do this if you don't have the tools) It runs about $60.00 for the test. I removed my bed before I brought it in and saved a few bucks on the labor.
Polaris should fix your RZR if it fails either test.

Mine is in the shop for the same thing. Rings were toast with less than 20 hrs on it.

Re: Oil consumption question

I had an interesting and candid conversation with a Polaris dealer yesterday. I related the problems I've been hearing about and that my dealer seems to be snowballing me on the damage question. What he confided to me was (and I'm sure this isn't news to many)

Polaris doesn't pay a dealer nearly enough for top-end work so many will try like hell to weasel out of such a claim any way they can. The point is: Don't stop pushing. If you are sure your Rzr has suffered dust damage but the dealer claims it's fine or it isn't covered for one reason or another, don't take no for an answer. Ask to see the manager, owner, etc. Complain to the BBB--about the dealership, not Polaris. Try to resolve it at the dealership level but if that doesn't work get the name of the district rep. and complain to him. To Polaris the customer has more say than their own dealers.

I'm skeptical about that last part but that's what he told me.

Re: Oil consumption question

My 2008 RZR had 1000km on it and 44hrs, it was burning oil and 2 weeks out of warranty when i discovered this. I did a compression test it was around 130. Took it to a dealer, they called polaris and they covered the repair. A new set of rings, a new air filter and a new airbox boot. I hope this is the end of the problems, to early to tell.
