BTW. The dirt up by the crank case filter at the top has been there since before. I need to clean that. But notice the UNI filter is very clean.
Well, I have been worried ever since I saw dust past my filter in the intake tube. When I was at my local Polaris dealer a couple weeks back I was talking to the mechanic about adding a frame filter behind a Lonestar grill. He showed me the 700xp Ranger has a two-stage filtration system with filter material in a box under the hood before it goes back to a filter just like the RZR. I wanted something I could just replace and so when I saw the Frame filters ($7.99) at Kragen I thought it would work. You could also put in a K&N if you wanted.
To start I took the bed off and cut a 4" square access hole. I then put the bed back on and used a black marker to mark where the bottom of the air horn is. I then made a template out of paper (square 6 1/4" x 6 1/4") and placed it on top of my line. I traced it out with a black marker and used my dremel to cut it out. I also had to trim the air horn at the top about 1". While I had the bed off I used black silicone to seal off the connection to the air box (I didn’t take it out as I was able to silicone it all the way around) and I sealed the bottom of the air horn. I put the bed back on and used silicone to fill the gap between the air horn and the bed that covers it. I also used expanding black "pond" foam from Home depot around the back of the intakes inside the air horn as it's impossible to get silicone back there. I used that same black expanding foam to seal off the old downward facing air inlet. After the expanding foam dried I trimmed it with a razor blade and put silicone over the top of it inside the air box.
I took the RZR to sand mountain for a few days and it seemed to do very well. I still need to get some grease for the air box lid but very, very little sand from 3 days of riding made it past the frame filter. I actually think the air box lid leaked what was in there, as I did not grease it. I also didn’t even change the frame filter until I got home. It was somewhat dusty but not real bad. I think the biggest improvement is that the air does not suck downward drawing in the dust from below.
