whats the proper way to dyno?

i have been told two different ways to dyno a RZR.

one is just throw it on the dyno drums and see what you get. this one would seem real world, as you are driving it testing.

the other is to put a spacer in the driven clutch so it only shifts out alittle and acts like a manual trans.

i know the two different ways will give some pretty different readings, but what one is correct or standard?

or am i just splitting hairs and tunning can be accomplished both ways?

Re: whats the proper way to dyno?

Have you looked at the HunterWorks Video of him running his dyno? I've seen a few on the dyno and there actually is a proper setup to get the best results. Check out some of the YouTube videos also.

Re: whats the proper way to dyno?

what are you trying to accomplish just a max hp number? or are you tuning the efi. There are several techniques i wouldnt recommend clutch tuning for the most part you can get it close sorta but you really need real world for clutch setup. The most important thing when testing cvt is to do the run the exact same way everytime meaning very exact if you start a run a say 6mph and 2100rpm each comparable run needs to start within a few 100rpm and same mph otherwise its hard to guage stuff do to the cvt. I can get all cvt i have done very close on the dyno for tuning but they still usually require a little rd in an actual riding situation to be right for that setup.

Re: whats the proper way to dyno?

i am trying to get the optimun fuel and ignition maps for my machine. i had my rzr dynoed last week and the numbers were not where i thought they would be. so i am just asking how everyone else dynoes thie rzr, so i can make sure mine is being dynoed correctly and i am comparing apples to apples with others.

so far its seems like i spent $1800 for a 3.7 hp gain and i had to replace the agressive clutch with stock to get these numbers. its not adding up in my book.

Wow, can you post the numbers or graph?
How was the seat of the pants feel?

Re: whats the proper way to dyno?

what did you do for $1800 i will say one thing sometimes dyno's and cvt are hard to guage hp increase by. Granted there should be some but it will almost always be lower than what the end user / customer thinks. ALOT of people over inflate HP and what they actually put out.

Make sure you get adequate tires any form a nobbies will start to destroy hp numbers on higher hp quads i didnt think it made as much of a diff until i actually owned a dyno and tested different setups. Also when doing mods that are based for speed is doeasnt hurt to make a few timed runs some place to guage against the hp numbers. Sometimes 2-3 hp at rear can make a big diff in times and how fast. You should look at speeds on the dyno sheet mapped againt hp curve and how the curve looked before and after mods.
