Drive Belt Care
So now that I've taken delivery, and with more and more seat time, I'm sure the questions will start coming fast & furious. So here's one:
During delivery the dealer tells me that the fastest way to burn up a belt is slow/low speed driving in Hi gear. But what exactly is considered slow/low speed driving? And for how long? For me it shouldn't be an issue. But if my wife/daughter are driving do I need to be concerned if they're putting around for 15 minutes at 5 to 10mph? If so I may just have them in Lo whenever they drive by themselves. Although how long and at what speed is OK in Lo without damaging something? Is a couple minutes at 5 mph in Hi OK just to get out of the parking lot or camp spot?
Thanks guys!
Ron ...

Re: Drive Belt Care
Na driving under a hard load like up hills or in sand going slow might not be good but I wouldnt worry like putting around with no big load or drag

Re: Drive Belt Care
Johnny's right on the money there. I have owned so many Polaris machines that I feel like I may have some input... I consider 10-15 mph the low range top end. I do a lot of hunting and rough trail riding that require me to keep the machine at those speeds for extended periods. Low is the way to go for sure! any grade or load on the vehicle at lower speed would also warrant the low gear selection. However, if you are traveling 10 mph for a mile on a flat surface with no load, the belt or clutch won't know the difference. I find it convenient to start off in high in those situations, because I intend on increasing my speed at a moments notice. The only down side to driving in low gear is the machine's jerkiness. It likes to alternate between neck-wrenching acceleration and seatbelt-grabbing engine braking (especially when new/young drivers are at the helm). Hope this helps, have fun and remember these things are pretty damn bomb-proof despite what you read in certain forums!!!!!!!!!!!
