Intake popping noise

I have done several searches, so if this has been discussed point me in the right direction. The only thing I could find is that popping in the intake is from a lean condition.

When I bought my RZR-S last year I put a UMP filter on it and have no other engine mods at all and was told this was fine. Later I installed a clutch kit and started to get a little popping in the intake at around 6300 rpm and was told it was from the rev limiter. The last 2 times out in the dunes I have noticed I am getting more popping and at lower RPMs, today it was popping at 5400 rpm. Could it be that the filter is getting dirty enough to be leaning it out? I pulled it and it still looks pretty clean (except from the dog hair) I have a new filter and thought I would put it in and try that.

TIA

Brian

Re: Intake popping noise

6300 would be the soft limiter. If the clean filter don't fix it you might want to pull the bed and make sure something isn't loose under there pulling unfiltered air in.

Re: Intake popping noise

a dirty filter will make it go rich not lean. Is the popping noise on decel? If so mine does the same thing when i chop the throttle on decel and it is caused bu excess fuel in the pipe that ignites.

Re: Intake popping noise

Just wanted to throw in that a dirty filter will actually cause a RICH condition because you'll be getting less air and the same amount of fuel.

Re: Intake popping noise

Yea, you guys are right in a dirty filter making it rich.....long day and brain fart. The popping is happening on hard acceleration like approching a dune and then getting on the throttle all the way, the popping stops if I let up on the throttle a little.

Re: Intake popping noise

I'd consider pulling the plugs and seeing what's going on color wise. Change them out and see if it makes a difference. (I always start with the cheap and simple)

Re: Intake popping noise

How many hours on it? This could be a valve adjustment. If the intake is staying open too long, especially at higher rpm under load, you will hear this type of pop because the vale is still open a tiny bit at ignition. It is also possible your ignition timing has changed and this will do a similar thing. Any signs of over heating?

Yes pull the plugs and see if it's running hot, very white carbon not tan. Tan is the color you want. Black is too much fuel, and flaky black and wet is oil. If too hot, white plug, check the timing and valve lash.

Re: Intake popping noise

Well that makes sense. It could definitely be timing. Good luck I hope it runs like a beast!!!

Re: Intake popping noise

I pulled the plug (what a chore!) and here they are, they look pretty good to me. The rear was a little darker than the front and when I went to pull the plug wire it didnt feel like it was locked on the plug all the way....maybe that has something to do with it. Everything was tight on the intake boots so it doesnt look like any air leaks. I got a new filter in it and will pick up new plugs tomorrow. I will also ask the dealer about it and see what they say.

Re: Intake popping noise

Yeah they look good. You could be onto something with the boot not connected correctly, although I would expect to see a little more fouling because of unburnt gas, but you say it was darker and that would be consistent. The loose wire might explain why it only happens at higher rpm though once you get enough vibration.

It would be interesting to hear what the dealer says.

Re: Intake popping noise

does it sound similar to this....?
This video was when I installed the turbo kit and the clutch was not adjusted right. It was all over the rev limiter....

Re: Intake popping noise

Yes, it sounds just like that. I suspect I need to do some changes on the weights of the clutch. I have an email into DDP for advice.

Re: Intake popping noise

Does it pop or does it make a ba ba ba sound? Probably hitting the rev limiter like someone else said. Did it do this before? Have you inspected the primary for wear?
