Hey guys this is my first time on RZR Forums.Net, and I'm hoping someone might shed some light on my problem before I take my rzr in for service. I went thru a creek yesterday that was roughly 1.5-2 feet deep and I believe I may have either burned out the clutch or the tranny. when I reached the other side of the creek my rzr would hardly pull itself out of the creek and when I finally made it onto the bank I smelled a harsh burning odor (kinda like a burning clutch in a car) I got a tow from a buddy back to my trailer and was able to get the rzr on the trailer but only if I got a run at it. My rzr has no bottom end whatsoever so I'm guessing it is a clutch problem. I am no mechanic by any means and diagnosing these problems is not my forte. here's hoping that someone with more knowledge on the RZR might have some insight for me on this problem and hopefully let me know what I can do to keep this from happening again. I have been researching snorkel kits today, but I am still a little unsure if that will cure my problem. I hope no one has had this same problem , but if you have please let me know about your outcome with getting the dealer to handle this problem hopefully under warranty. thanks

Re: Burned out clutch??
You probably just got your belt soaked. In the manual I believe it says to put the rzr in neutral and slowly rev up / add some rpm to allow the belt to dry. You can remove the belt housing to make sure all the water is out. Dumb design by PoPo not to put a drain plug in the housing....

Re: Burned out clutch??
pull the side cover and dry everything out. go to polaris and get a new belt or 2. I went to the local commercial belt (bearing belt and chain)store and bought 2 hd snowmobile belts. way better !!!!!!! I did this on my polaris 500ho scrambler. with just the belt change out, it made a HUGE difference. I always carry a spare in the truck....

Re: Burned out clutch??
I've seen several posters mention that they carry a spare clutch belt with them on the trails. I have a Goodyear Gatorback belt on order as a spare. I have not gotten my RZR yet so I have not really been able to look one over in detail. My snowmachines had a bracket for stowing a spare belt. Does the RZR have something similar or a knook and cranny where people are keeping them? Or do they just take up room in the Lock and Ride Box?

Re: Burned out clutch??
Pull the cover off, and put some grease in the groove. Behind the clutch cover you have a elbow that attaches to the back of the cover. It has 2 clamps on it. Check both of them.

Re: Burned out clutch??
Hey guys, this is my first time on here. I have a question for the board. I'm replacing my drive belt on my RZR (for the second time) and i'm having a little trouble. I bought a EPI heavy duty belt (b/c it's the second time) and i can't for the life of me get this thing to go on. has anyone used the EPI belts and if so is there a trick to getting this thing on there. Any help would be appreciated!! It almost seems like the EPI belt is smaller than the stock Polaris belt, but i know it's not.

Re: Burned out clutch??
A performance belt should be either shorter (so it grabs quicker), wider (so it grabs quicker) , thicker (so it allows more torque) or stiffer/stronger (so it stretches less under load) ANY of these attributes will make the belt harder to install.
If the tolerances on YOUR Rzr stack up towards making the belt a tight fit (kinda likely if you're burning up belts), it could be VERY hard to install a HP belt. A clutch alignment might do you more good than a HP belt.

Re: Burned out clutch??
Hey guys, just got my rzr back from warranty work with the dealer and it definitely was the belt getting wet and slipping. I did go thru and remove the pvt cover like everyone said and there was a good deal of water inside it. The belt dried out and the rzr seemed to run fine but I had the belt replaced anyway due to the belt slipping while it was wet. I also ordered a heavier duty belt from dragonfire racing that will replace the stock belt the next time I have any problems. Next project will be a snorkel kit to avoid this problem in the future.

Re: Burned out clutch??
Just for the record, EPI/DFR belts can be put on just like the stock belts. There is no need to remove the primary or secondary clutch to install the belt. It is a little tough getting, but it can be done. Start by placing the belt around the primary clutch and around the top of the secondary clutch. Turn the secondary clutch clockwise until the belt gets so tight that the clutch won't spin. Use a rubber malet or a 1/2" thick piece of wood and tap the belt into the secondary clutch. Spin the secondary clutch counter clockwise until it stops again. Repeat the process until the belt goes on. You may need to beat the belt pretty hard into the secondary clutch. Be carefull not the hit any part of the clutch, only the top of the belt. Take your time and with a little patience and a few beers....the belt will go on.

Re: Burned out clutch??
I actually thought the EPI belt was easier than the Goodyear belt to install.
It started into the secondary clutch easier than the Goodyear and I too used the hammer to drive the belt into the secondary. Piece of cake. |

Re: Burned out clutch??
I found it easy to wrap the old belt or new belt around the clutch on the right if your facing the back of the vehicle as you would be changing the belt. Pull up and get the sheave to widen, then put a 1" piece of rubber, or a piece of the old belt works great (needs to be about 1"w x 1/2"thick, 2-3" long) , to hold the sheave open then take out the belt and the rubber or whatever you use will hold it open. Now install the belt by putting it as far on the right sheave that you just spread and it should easily slide on the left sheave. Hope this helps.
