Funny belt wear

All right, I need help from the experts. My brothers drive belt keeps exploding in less than 10 hours of riding. The belt is wearing on one side and not the other until it just finally goes to shreds. He has tried expensive belts and cheap belts and no change. We have taken the clutch apart to make sure everything is smooth. Could this be an alignment problem? Please help as we are out of ideas and gettin realy tired of changing belts.

Re: Funny belt wear

Yes I would check the alignment. Polaris has a special tool...
But on both of mine the belt barely touches the rear sheave of the primary when the engine is off. If it is in the center of the bearing, touching the front sheave, or rubbing up against the rear sheave excessively, I would say it is out of alignment.
There are shim washers under the secondary to align the clutch. add or subtract washers to line it up.

While you are in there, check the bearing in the primary to make sure it is turning smoothly. they can get plugged with belt dust and/or burn up.

Another thing to check is the washers on each side of the bearing. Sometimes when you blow a belt the high heat will destroy the washers.

Re: Funny belt wear

It sounds like an alignment issue as Cliff has covered well but I would add that these belts do need to be broken in if new, the owners manual does cover this,
John

Re: Funny belt wear

If it's wearing on one side, and shredding on you quickly, I'd say its an alignment issue.
