Trying to do maintenance

I thought I would change the oil but I'm striking out, I can't get the plug out. Is it just a 7/32" allen wrench key. I've been cranking on it so hard but it won't release the allen wrench actually spun through once. Am I using the wrong tool?

Also I thought I would change the spark plugs, do you have to take the bed off to get to the things?

I didn't think these simple items would be so difficult. Am I just making it too hard?

Re: Trying to do maintenance

how many hrs?try a ice pack on it to cool it and make it shrink, take a plumbing torch or heat gun to raidly warm the case around it so it will expand and give a quick try,you can always by a new plug, but a helicoil in your case sucks

Re: Trying to do maintenance

i used a 6mm allen head that fits on a socket. it fit better than any of my standard allen heads did. it wasn't very tight in there either. which is odd, cause every bike/atv i've ever owned's oil drain plug has been way overtightened from the factory.

Re: Trying to do maintenance

I'll give those a try.

It has like 320 miles on it. The oil looks really good. I bought it used, and when I changed the oil filter I found a bunch of sand in the air box, makes me nervous. I wanted to check the compression but Its too tight to get to the spark plugs. Seems like they should have an easy way to access these parts for maintenance.

Re: Trying to do maintenance

run the motor get it warm.. when it gets hot both the aluminum and the steel will expand, but the aluminum will expand more than the steel plug. then use a 6mm allen socket and a breaker bar.. be very careful to keep everything straight.. if you strip it out, you're going to have to use a chisel to get it out, or take it somewhere to get it out..

on the plugs, you can get them out with the bed on, just be careful to make sure you blow the pockets out with air before you pull them out, the plug pockets fill up with dirt and if you dont blow them out when you pull the plug out, all of the crap in there will fall into the hole.

Re: Trying to do maintenance

Exactly what Marty said a 7/32" is slightly smaller than a 6MM Allen Wrench...the 6MM will fit very tight/snug...if you think it is stripped too much and don't want to take a chance...installed the 6MM Allen Wrench with JB Quik Weld or something compatible and let it set then remove the plug so you don't damage the case...easier to order another plug than PULL your engine, because I don't think anyone will try except for maybe MartyMoe and be successful at the alternative....I always bump something like this with a few sharp taps to jar it prior to breaking out but on this I woul;d be reluctant....

Re: Trying to do maintenance

Ohhhh, I wish I would have read this last post before I tried warming it up. Its a well stripped out now and still just as damn tight.

Do you think if tried JB welding in a socket head allen wrench now would do me any good?

Think I'd have any luck with a dealer saying this is a warranty issue because it was installed too tight from the factory?

Re: Trying to do maintenance

Okay well I give up, I dropped it off at a dealer yesterday. There was a recall for the air box update as well. They said they would have it back for me by next weekend. With the air box update they check the compression to make sure there was no damage done.

They said they will ususally use an impact gun to get the plug out.
