2011 rzr s cooling fan

my fan wouldnt turn on last night so today i unplugged the coolant temp sensor and started the bike. im getting 14 volts with it running at the fan connector but i loose it when i plug in the fan. i think the wire is damaged between the fan connector and the relay but i dont wanna tear the harness all apart if i dont need to. can anyone tell me how many ohms a working fan motor has? mine is 2.8-3.0 ohms. if yall have any other ideas or dont think im on the right track please let me know.

thanks

Do you have a good ground? Does the fan turn freely?

Have you checked the breaker?

Re: 2011 rzr s cooling fan

when you unplug the temp sensor, the fan should come on (if ignition is on)
Try it with the key on. If it don't come on, then find the circuit breaker for the fan (either is under the drivers seat just out of the harness with two wires going into it, or up under the dash. It might be two breakers with tie bars also. check for power to ground before and after the breaker when key is turned on and sensor is unplugged. you should see 12 volts at both sides. if you have 12 volts on only one side, check the connections. check for small holes in the silver casing of the breaker, they rot out and fail. if you have 12v on both sides, then check the connector at the fan.
there is also a fan fuse in the fuse box under the dash, and a fan relay.
the temp sensor goes to the ecu and the ecu provides power to a relay...so dont try to send 12v along any of the wiring.
like the other poster said, spin the fan to see if it's free....if its a fuse blown it blew for a reason.

Re: 2011 rzr s cooling fan

I unplugged the temp sensor and I'm getting 14 volts with the bike running at the plug for the fan but when I plug the fan in and back probe it I loose all of the voltage so either there is a broken wire that can't carry enough amperage sustain the voltage or the fan is shorted internally causing no voltage drop across it. Last night I hot wired the fan and ran it like that but I need to see how many ohms a working fan motor has compared to my 2.8-3.0 ohms.

Thanks for all of the input.

Re: 2011 rzr s cooling fan

Thanks for the reply. I have already relocated mine as well and I am getting voltage at the fan connection but it is falling off. I really just need someone to see how many ohms of resistance their working fan motor has. The service manual I downloaded from here doesn't say or maybe I just can't find it.

Thanks again
Mason

The manual doesn't show a OHM reading for the fan. You might try putting your volt meter across the breaker. It should read 0 volts, if it reads 12 -14 volts, the the breaker is open. Another way is to put the positive probe on one of the post of the breaker and the other on frame ground and note the voltage. Then move the lead to the other post on the breaker and not the voltage. If the breaker is opening, I would then try momenteraly shorting the post of the breaker. If the fan starts running the breaker has gone bad.

I have a 2013 rzr with a cooling fan issue. I have replaced the breaker and relocated. Still no fan. Hot wired the fan and it works. At the relay I show the left 2 legs at 14 volts. The bottom right at 3.27 volts coming from the ECU and the top right at 0 which runs to the fan. Why will the fan not come on at temp.?

Re: 2011 rzr s cooling fan

Have you tried replacing the relay? Could be a bad temp sensor?

Re: 2011 rzr s cooling fan

I have replaced the thermistor in the top of the motor. Temp. Reads fine on the cluster. I have also switched the relays around since they are all the same. No fan still.
Thanks for the reply

The relay requires 12 volt control signal from the ecu to energize the relay coil. That should close the relay contacts and then supply 12 volt to the fan. 3.27 volts will not energize that relay. Check your temp sensor.

To test:

I believe if you disconnect the harness to the temperature sensor the ecu try's to fail safe the fan on, Then the ecu should put out 12 volts and attempt to energize that relay. Fan should run.
