Helmet Bumper & Nerf Bar Material

I'm wanting to fab some Front/Rear Bumpers and some Nerf bars and was just wondering what the choice material is being used. I don't want to over-build these pieces so that it actually causes damage to the rest of the vehicle in the event I hit something. I just want to provide enough protection against frame damage and undercarriage damage. I have access to a fairly nice fabb shop with a mandrel tubing bender, notcher and etc.

I also was giving some thought to coming up with some type of design for a front push bumper setup similar to how the police/sheriff have. I've actually had to push quite a few people on some outings and my Polaris bumpers just haven't held up to that kind of abuse.

Thanks!

I you want it tough use .120 wall mild steel but some benders have a problem with that if so go to .095 wall.

Re: Bumper & Nerf Bar Material

I think there is also a market for lightweight (even aluminium) brushguards. The main reason I bought the polaris front brushguard was for looks and a conventient mounting point for extra lights. Since it's mounting points are a bit weak anyway and push into the radiator, it made a lot more sense if they were lightweight. Funnily enough, I believe Polaris have announced Baja aluminium front brushguard which is identical but lighter - since you're unlikely to actually need a physical guard out in the desert.
