New UHMW Skid Plates - spy pics
I took these pics today of a new set of UHMW skid plates being developed.
No dates or prices yet but they look great.
Full 1/2" UHMW. This stuff is incredibly rigid.
Seems to have just enough drainage to let the mud out without weakening the
plate.
Has full front and rear diff coverage with access holes for drains etc.
The bolt heads and cup washer are below the surface so they won't get banged up.
The best part is the coverage is all the way out under the rocker panels.
Some of the bolts are just temporary and I'm told there are going to be several changes in the final version. This was a hand made prototype. The production version will be CNC cut.

Re: New UHMW Skid Plates - spy pics
Cue the Mission Impossible theme song....
I called him and he said a set of Aluminum weighs 48lbs and the UHMW weighs 40lbs.
He was comparing with Ricochets aluminum skids which are made of 3/16" (.190) 5052-H32 Aluminum. (thanks google)
Its in Utah. Shipping should be less than Aluminum.
I like the fact that the 1/2" UHMW weighs less than 3/16 aluminum.

Re: New UHMW Skid Plates - spy pics
Have you removed them and checked the center cross member?
Some have claimed that 3/8 will let it get bent up into the driveline.
Not sure I believe that is possible.

Yes, the RZR pictured in the auction is mine actually and they put a brand new skid plate on for the pictures. 3/8 is all anyone will ever need and it will outlast the RZR I'm pretty sure. I know one hit we took in the Mojave had me and the passenger telling each other there had to be a hole in the skid plate! Thank god it wasn't the stocker!! We were flying along on a trail and came up on a bike so we had to kill him or take evasive action. Slammed over a small boulder at about 45. We thought for sure we broke the skid plate. Nothing but a small scrape on the plastic, not even a gouge! My bro in law was telling me he has UHMW lining his dump truck beds and this is a common practice, so the stuff is tough. My stock skids were thrashed after 2 trips. Anyway after some serious abuse the RZR looked unscathed when we took the plates off. They do the job for sure...

Re: New UHMW Skid Plates - spy pics
$$$ info would be great.
Just from reading everything here, it sounds like UHMW skid plates are a no brainer purchase.

With impact being spread out over the flat surface of a skid plate ( dissipation ) I would not think that would be probable. IMHO

I put on some aluminum skids (.156") 6 months ago and they have taken such a beating. Rocks have done a job on some of the exposed bolt heads on the rockers and even ripped one off. I'm concerned that the 3/8" Factory UTV skids will also leave these bolt heads exposed even though they are partially protected by the recessed mounting holes.
Has anyone received any info on those 1/2" thick UHMW skids? Price and vendor?
Thanks
p.s. I would NOT recommend my aluminum skids.

Re: New UHMW Skid Plates - spy pics
I know the price on a sheet of 4x10 1/2" uhmw is $420 here local to me, and I believe 3/8" is $280. It takes a 4x5 sheet to make the skids, so they will have $210 in materials for the 1/2" plus it's $45 an hour to cut it on a cnc. I'm currently talking to them about cutting skids for me and selling them. I know 3/8" skids have been selling for almost $400 plus $115 to ship on ebay, so i'm sure they will ask for even more for the 1/2". If I get it to work out the way I plan, I hope to be able to sell the 1/2" for the same price people have been getting for the 3/8". Honestly, they shouldn't be charging more than $275-$300 for the 3/8" plus shipping.
