Re: 26" Bighorn Pressures?
Update - after switching to the 26" bighorns on 14" rims from the stock tyres I've noticed the ride quality has deteriorated quite a bit. I had expected an improvement, particulary as people say radials are a lot better in this respect (though I'm not sure how a stiffer tyre can improve ride quality).
I've worked out my own loss in ride quality is down to a number of reasons:
* My wheels + tyres have added nearly 40lbs of unsprung weight... I think that's the biggest reason in ride quality loss
* Going to a 14" rim... less sidewall flex to absorb bumps... I'm also wondering how much a 14" rim contribuited to the weight gain, I wonder if 12" wheels + 26" bighorns would have been lighter overall (though the tyres weigh more in this configuration)
* Going for 12 psi. I think 10psi is nearer the mark, though I think 12psi is more optimal from a performance point of view for me as I do quite a bit of miles on hardpack.
In any case I'm going to opt for 10psi and see if I can claw back a little of my ride quality. I should add that the ride is only a problem at the higher speeds of 30mph+ where it feels worse than before, at the lower speeds I think the effects of the wheels/tyres is reduced and it comes mainly down to just your suspension.
Apoligies for a long winded post on the subject!
