To install an Optima, all you need is a battery box.
RPMFAB.com battery box

Here is a good post by martymoe, this may or may not be your problem.

i've found the wiring between the voltage regulator to be too small and the wire gets hot and drops 2 or more volts before it gets into the system..
the location of the voltage regulator under the drivers seat is also a problem because at trail riding speeds there isnt enough air flow to keep it cool and it shuts on and off to keep cool (there is your charging problem or a whole lot of it)
on this 09, i was looking for a good place to put the power commander and something struck me weird (like there was something missing) but it didnt occur to me what was missing.. a little later on we took off the hood to fill it with anti freeze and i noticed something out of place in front of the radiator at the top.. guess what.. it was a voltage regulator.. i'll bet it works much better up there where it can get air.. one of the problems is when the fan is running it takes a lot of power and the voltage regulator gets hot trying to keep up.. now, with it in front of the radiator the fan will draw air across it and help keep it cool.. it should work great.. i know by simply making a heat sync out of aluminum and bolting my voltage regulator to it made a drastic improvement so this should work very well..
